Taiwanese is not even Chinese proper, anon. It's a sister language to the Chinese language family (Mandarin, Cantonese, Hakka, Shanghainese, Hui,...).
Which is why they have two readings for each character and the "old" reading is just a foreign language to them, as it is in Japanese or Vietnamese.
