It's a shame it had to be this way.

What new character would they even need to add for the game to regain its popularity? Someone from UT/DR? Hornet? Quote? Isaac?

Honestly I don't know why didn't also make most of the assists full fighters too. It's possible they'll get promoted in the future but its still super lame

Well Rivals of Aether 1 already pretty much fills the void of "Platformer Fighter where I can make ANYTHING??", and with smaller easier sprites to make too, so I dunno

To be fair, the idea of an indie smash clone (as in, pulling characters from different games as opposed to just having an original cast for the game) feels like a doomed prospect. You either get the heavy hitters, or you get some literal whos, or whoever the devs happen to be friends with.
And even when you do get some well known characters, how well they mesh together (either thematically or in terms of design) might be another problem.

>>719249171
It's unfortunately just not practical, unless you simplify the gameplay or visual style to make it more easily reproducible. Making a fighting game character is a pretty time consuming process (you can't just slap a moveset together, you actually have to playtest and tweak it a bunch), usually on the order of months even for Nintendo.
This is why the Fraymakers developers put out mod tools, so to entice people to help fulfill the roster where the devs themselves can't.

It's just unfortunate. It seems the devs had high hopes and ambitions but like you say, an indie crossover fighter is an idea that likely will never work. Obviously it takes a lot of work to make a smash fighter but a base roster of 9 is definitely not nearly enough to make a game that people would want to come back to, even with the workshop

I think fighting games is one of those genres (like MMORPGs) that every starry eyed developer wants to dip their feet into, but the reality is that fighting games are really, really tough not to just get right, but also market. Either your game needs to do something really novel (like Your Only Move is Hustle), or be prepared that your fighter is going to be a "Discord fighter" (ie. matchmaking is done through Discords because any in-game online lobbies are dead) from day one.
Hell, I could very well develop a fighting game myself, I have all the technical know-how and artist skills, but I'll rather stick to a "safer" genre, because nobody would want to play my idealized version of a better established or beloved fighting game when they can keep playing it instead (see what happened with all those melee clones).

This is incorrect, the game flopped because it had few characters, no content, was unpolished, didn't feel good, had an overall unappealing style despite the seeming fidelity. Rivals of Aether on the other hand succeeded because it was built on a great game. Rivals 2 workshop will succeed as well despite requiring 3D skill because of this.

When will these games feature indie horror characters?
Jake !hYY.7y0DY6 No.719265018 [Report] >>719265084

The game is going to bomb based on poor roster choices alone. The devs prioritized assist characters as a gimmick to stand out not realizing that people want characters playable, not assists, even their most requested character they turned into just an assist. And it takes too long to for them to create actual playable characters because they're too busy developing more assists. All in all this is another failed experiment in the platform fighter genre and i can never understand why rights holders allow their characters to be apart of such crossovers, especially for a concept done to death such as indie crossover platform fighters, the novelty wore of and it's not special anymore. Just make an indie crossover RPG or life sim or some other genre.

Platform fighter, the genre is called platform fighter. The more people call it a "clone" the more they devalue and disrespect the genre making it look bad. No wonder why not more people want to make platform fighters when they know their game will be disrespected by smash fanbase.

That might be their motive but that doesn't work when the game itself doesn't do well, especially assists. Seriously, how many people actually go out of their way to search for the origins of an assist character?

>To start your high fidelity indie fighter you shoehorn in 2 other characters from existing indie platform fighters
I like Fishbunjin and Orcane, but those were really retarded decisions for starting roster picks when they could have chosen bigger names that people want in Smash or any fighter. Also the rollback was utter dogshit on release and devs need to find a way to make rollback compatible with custom content.

I thought about playing that game. I wonder if any indie studio creates crossovers of any genre.
All i know about is Nicalis, Ludosity and Inti Creates. I never never into the former and i gave up interest in the latter two.

>It's possible they'll get promoted in the future but its still super lame
1. What are the chances if the game turns out to be a bomb?
2. Even if that's possible how long will it take for an assist to be developed into a full playable character?

Indie platform fighters always have tiny rosters, they're lucky to even have as many as the original Smash's base roster. I guess that's about as many as they're able to make with their time and budget, but it does make them all a hard sell next to Smash having nearly 100 at this point.
