Depends on the model.
The OG release "Fat" model? Yes; full backwards comp with PS1 and 2 discs.

After that, Snoy started shaving off more and more tech to save money.
EU Fat version replaced PS2 hardware with shoddy software emulation. Still kiiinda works.

All "Slim" variants lack PS2 compatibility altogether.
But you can still run PS1 games just fine, since it's been emulation since day 1.

That being said, you can *kinda* restore PS2 compatibility with Jailbreak hacks,
but even then you're better off sticking with the PSN Store's pre-packed re-releases.

All that said and done, PS3 might be the last console worth actually owning.

I am STILL irritated that I got pushed ONE (1) firmware update past the jailbreaking threshold by playing Uncharted and was never able to find someone to flash or modchip my PS3. I never did all that much with it, never used the pile of rips I grabbed from a since-dead private tracker on a since-dead hard drive.

but wasn't there some brand new hack that works on all PS3 systems now? Super Slim included? You should look into it.

Also, I do believe you can perform a factory reset on all PS3 consoles if needed.

Most PS2 first parties are 60fps, it aged fine and has the best library of any console
