Why can't you kill children in Skyrim without installing mods?

Its not like im gonna rape dead kids like a necrophile or sexually exploit them. Its just weird if im fighting a dragon and the kid runs infront of my firey balls and doesnt get hurt at all. Wtf?

Outside of the rest of what you said it is a good question after all Skyrim is based on Viking/Germanic themes and in the Nibelungenlied Hagen did kill Ortlieb the son of Etzel though there was specific circumstances involved there.

my understanding its its something to do with all the rating agencies. if you can kill kids it ends up getting ESRB Adult Only or whatever the eu and asia equivalent are. Those games arent carried by retailers at all, have heavy restrictions on how they can be marketed/advertised (basically they cant be at all) and its the same rating porn games get. Releasing a game with that rating is generally a death sentence in terms of sales to release a game with that rating.

kids are coded as a different entity in the game, what makes it so they can't die, also makes it so they are incompatible with mods that affect normal npcs, so if you removed their inability to die by changing them to be same type of entity as every other npc on skyrim, any other mod would also affect them.

that's not how it works at all. Individual npcs have flags attached to them that defines whether they can be killed or not. Death flags don't exist based on race. They get assigned on the individual level. Otherwise, all nords, including generic nord bandits, would be unkillable because Jarl Balgruuf is also unkillable.

no it's not only regular NPCs have this flag, since all children are designed to be essential by default, this is done at the race level. They child races have a "child" flag and that is what's used to determine essential behavior. It's also the flag most 18+ mods use to block these actors from being used

It's the wests war on fun, that's why. Many regions would ban the game or give it a higher ESRB rating which would reduce sales. It's worth noting in the original Fallout 1 & 2 you could kill children, and you would get "Childkiller" reputation, making pretty much everyone hostile against you.

Barely anyone really cares about killing children in games, but it's the fact that you COULD if you WANTED to that increases player immersion and makes the world feel more alive.

Conversely in games like Fallout 3 when you shoot a child and they don't die, you're pulled out of any semblence of the simulation and are reminded that you're playing a game.

That's why many older games have stood the test of time because coming from tabletop RPGs, the game design philosophy was to simulate a real fantasy world as much as possible.
