I marathoned this game in a week. Only finished at 51% completion though, and just under 17 hours.

If Silksong is this, but with a protagonist that's more fun to control (and based off the gameplay vids, that seems to be exactly what it'll be), then it'll be the masterpiece that people claim this game is instead of just an 8/10. Because the fact the hero in this game feels like you're controlling 2D Mario is absolutely its biggest weakness.

Really? You're only real issue is the silent protag? Not the bloated world? The insane backtracking? The unoriginal, boring abilities? The incredibly simple gameplay/combat?
It's an 8/10, and not because of The Knight.

theres a lot of cool stuff to do
get the essence to start the next part of the 'main quest', fight the dream versions of false knight/soul master/broken vessel if you havent yet
also do the grimm troupee dlc once youre done

why do some people have such a chip on their shoulder about this game

I can't imagine rushing through a game for the purpose of 'catching up' for a release.
When I played through the dark souls games I didn't rush to get to Elden Ring. I wanted experience each one wholely. Otherwise, whats the point?
Better to skip it for now and come back.

The backtracking in this game is really obnoxious. Like, i remember going veeeery deep just to get a double jump and then it didnt open anything interesting until much later
I feel like it is way too pretentious in its "atmosphere" instead of making a fun game.
I enjoyed ender lillies and ender magnolia far more even if they are in the easy side.

Whenever I saw gameplay of this, I thought it looked incredibly lackluster and boring. But when I actually played it, it was fun and great. What does this mean? What is this optical illusion?

>Really? You're only real issue is the silent protag?
i could care less if the protag is silent. he's just boring to move around with for most of the game. he controls like an anthropomorphic rock.
>Not the bloated world?
The world design is great. I actually am tempted to just explore a bit more.
>The insane backtracking?
yeah this is definitely a knock on the game but not a huge one since the fast travel spots are usually pretty quick to get to from just about anywhere.
>The unoriginal, boring abilities?
So, there's two ways of looking at this. Yes, for most of the game i just stuck to the basic exploration charms. I only really felt the need to mix up my build with the last few bosses i went up against (Broken Vessel, Watcher Knights, Hollow Knight) and once i found something that worked (Quick Focus + Grubsong + Defender's Crest + Spore Shroom) i just found myself switching back and forth between exploration build and boss battle build. And i'm sure the latter would continue to change up if i did some of the colosseum stuff and some of the harder optional content, but yeah i do wish they gave me more of a reason to change things up sooner in the playthrough.
>The incredibly simple gameplay/combat?
Sure. combat could be a bit less basic. This is something that i have a good feeling about with Silksong though, and as it is in HK1, it's fine. Far from the problem with this game.

i didnt feel like i was stuck backtracking at all ever since i got the mantis claws. from that point onwards i always had something to do and a goal in mind
the double jump in particular, with it i could reach two masks that were previously innaccessible, made me able to reach the top of kingdom's edge and the colosseum, made me able to fight hornet 2 which is the requirement for being able to enter the abyss (place beneath the area where you get the wings), and obviously was a huge deal for whatever other places i was about to explore

in terms of travelling i really dont mind the time at all because of the well placed fast travels and eventually you get the Dream Gate ability
only occasionally i want to check a tiny small thing i couldnt reach or hadnt figured out before in some particular vacant corner, but even then that should be only 5~ minutes to reach it at most
