>how should I play arcade games
I usually use website that has the emulators and plug in a SNES controller.
>do I credit feed? do I limit myself to use only a certain number of credits?
Credit feeding is usually detrimental to your enjoyment. What happens is that as you get towards the last few stages / bosses you start losing lives so fast that when you do beat it, you feel like a failure or have a negative opinion of the games difficulty. People talk about patterns and practicing specific things but just getting really good at the basics through repeated play will see you through to the end of the game.
My suggestion, set it to easy or normal and give yourself 7 credits and map the coin button to the keyboard instead of the controller so you don't accidently touch it. When you lose, play it again and be surprised at how much you've improved, if you keep playing, beat it and want more, decide if you want to bump up the difficulty or lower the amount of credits. People whine about "starting the game all over again" but when the entire game is 20-25min long which is about the time between checkpoints in a modern game, it isn't actually a big deal.
I used to be annoyed by limited credits on console ports as a child but now I prefer a good home port that pre-decides an appropriate amount. It would be nice if emulators let you choose the number of credits / difficulty in the rom menu before the game started like the Capcom Collection on PS2 instead of having to go into the dip switch settings or tap a coin button, that was a great idea.
