People only feel outraged by games from the 00s being considered retro because gaming never progressed. In the 80s, we played Super Mario Bros 3, Star Command, and Ultima. In the 90s, we had X-Com, Starcraft, Age of Empires II, and Diablo. In the 00s, we had Morrowind, Warcraft 3, the first surge on popular MMOs like Guild Wars and World of Warcraft, Resident Evil 4, Half Life 2, and the whole orange box. In the 10s, we had graphical downgrades to the games above. Now in the 20s, we have both graphical downgrades and lower performance versions of the above that also cost more.

It's really hard to face something and think of it as retro when it feels like nothing ever came after. Kids didn't have a hard time considering Ultima: Quest of the Avatar as retro after playing Ultima: The Black Gate and then transitioning to Morrowind. It's really hard to consider something like Half Life retro when developers are still releasing source games using the same assets, or when devs keep making progressively uglier games with more simplified gameplay, or when devs keep selling the same game at higher prices every 7 years.

The problem is that with all this new powerful in comparison technology and what not the games themselves have largely not had any sory of leaps in capability that was seen like in the ps1-ps3 timeframe, slightly "better" looking games but with all the caveats that are out there just makes them in some cases annoying to play and they would benefit from whatever practices were being used in that era
