Great cast, interesting and memorable story. Materia system is fun even though it easily breaks the game. IV and VI are also high points in story writing but VII has the best character focus.

the game is otherwise on the lower rung for soundtrack (handily beaten by two layers of its neighbors in both directions), visuals (countless people stuck in the trainyard due to poor path creation), gameplay (atb-based, but this is a problem with a large portion of FF), and even general playability (some enemy animations taking 10 seconds to cycle through their idle animation before they are allowed to take part in combat animations, leaving you sitting, waiting, endlessly)

Fine plot and themes with a menacing villain, well-designed characters with captivating personalities and arcs, varied gameplay with simple difficulty for the story but plenty of optional content quests and secrets if you want more, all with a 10/10 OST.
It's not perfect but it does very well in most things imo (with the lacking areas not being positives but not ruining the greater package) and it's still my GOAT so far.

This is really a non issue. Every FF game with a world map is pretty much going in a straight line from place to place. Getting to other parts of the map and never returning anyways until you unlock some form of world travel. (Balamb Garden, Airship).
Plus it goes against the entire point of the game of Yuna never going to be able to see these places again because shes going on a trip she wont return from.

IV felt really solid to me when I played it a few years ago. I think it still holds up nicely. I rented it as a kid but I never ended up beating it then since my brother ended up getting FF6 for his birthday.
