It's not even just that Samus is always presented as independent. The characters in Other M are fractally stupid.

They don't even act like people or organisms with both a will to live and an understanding of cause and effect. That's kind of what happens in Other M sometimes. One of Adams orders is to only explore areas she can access with her currently authorized abilities. The logic probably being to keep her in the group so she doesn't solo the entire station. But then you get to that hell run. Technically the heat is killing her but as long as she survives it's an area she can explore with her authorized abilities.

There's other examples though. Samus gets dropped into a killbox where she's being shot at on all sides. Samus has the Wave Beam. She can stop this happening at any time. But she waits for Adam to give her permission. Even IRL soldiers have rules of engagement. They'll have to explain themselves but they don't have to tolerate being shot at because their CO is playing Castle Crashers on his phone. Adam knows about what's going on in the bottleship to some degree, Think he wrote some report or something advising them not to clone metroids and stuff. But this actually makes sense for Adam's character. Like that mission where Adam's brother dies. Could Samus have saved him? Possibly but Adam isn't the type to risk failure like that. So here it's that same fundamental value difference between Aran and Adam. Samus doesn't care about the odds she'll do it because she's Samus Aran while Adam is risk adverse. And that connects to the whole authorization shit. Adam is risk averse so he wants to limit the scope that everyone can explore the station. He wants to really do things slowly. So at the sector zero scene, maybe Samus could take out the Metroids but he's not going to risk that and would rather do a suicide mission(because he's made the executive order that Samus's life is more valuable than his). The scan visor is so fucking good I'm upset that no other game really uses them and just adds shit to a journal automatically that you have to pause and go read. I've read almost every logbook in the entire prime series which is impressive because I never fucking read logbooks in other games, I try to but I always end up getting bored and skipping them.

I'll be honest, a big part of why Other M is so offensive is that, at the time, it felt like the franchise may very well have died. But I've cooled down on it significantly since Samus Returns, Dread, and Prime Remastered came out. And now we're all waiting for Prime 4 and potentially Metroid 6 news. We can well and truly leave Other M behind.

One thing I've noticed from OM contrarians is they don't realize just because things "makes sense" or it's "realistic" doesn't necessarily give people a good impression of Samus' character from then on if we took the timeline into consideration, even for an origin story. It comes as kind of a culture shock when they've built up this character who's able to hold her own with some scenes portraying some subtle emotions through her actions to full-blown inner monologs and sappy drama. It has a lot in common with PE 3rd Birthday with how both games stupidly portray their strong fem leads narratively, though the latter's retarded twist was dumb and the ending was downright disrespectful.

This game just doesn't portray Samus very positively or that she's strong. All it really showed us as the audience is she's a stupidly stubborn, emotional, vulnerable Tsundere with daddy issues. It's so cliche for a female character it's practically insulting. I never got the impression she grew as a character either or accomplished anything. This is Jap female writing at its worst. Even Yuna one ups her in the retarded department, but even then it works for her as a character because she's young and has big shoes to fill on top of Spira's societal expectations.
