Tried Emerald SeaGlass but the graphics glitch whenever a new battle turn starts. Quick flash of white on screen whenever I open the select attack menu. Also like pokeMMO but I don't really play it anymore.

There was a really cool one years ago, idr the name but it was a fire red hack that turned it into gold version. It wasn't finished when I was playing it, but I had a ton of fun in highschool playing that one on my psp w/ a gba emulator

It's the Pokemon Orange romhack made by Pia CRT. It is being remade from the ground up under the name Pokemon Orange: Island Walker, which hasn't been released yet. But you can still find the original hack online.

I like it because I think the creator did a very good job turning the Orange Islands into a fleshed out region. I really appreciate when someone puts the work in to make a new region to explore and it turns out well.

Not to mention the cozy Gen II style sprites give the game a warm tropical vibe. Also, the elements from newer games that were added were well thought out, so only stuff that would make sense in an Orange Islands game better got in (like diving).

The subtle variants in pokemon design shown in the anime is a nice touch, and the post game Pokemon 2000 movie storyline where you get sent up on the airship is fun.

Very common for trade evolutions to be turned into by-level evolves, trade exclusives to be added into the wild or vendor, and legendaries to be placed somewhere on the map as one time encounters.
But it is rare to get only these changes on their own with nothing else mixed in. Like Fairy type being added.

Unbound is legitimately impressive. It kind of sucks that it was the first one I put a meaningful amount of time into, because everything else pales in comparison

DarkViolet is ok for being a Gen 1-but-different game. Nothing groundbreaking, but it's solid
Polished Crystal is kind of in the same camp, being Gen 2-but-different. Mostly just QoL changes with a couple of things added here and there

Renegade Platinum is good as a like definitive edition of Gen 4, but there's nothing truly special about it

those are the only ones I've put any real time into. I was thinking of doing Odyssey, Vega, or Glazed next

Back in 2010ish I remember playing liquid crystal before it finished development, that was really fun, my first time playing unofficial pokémon content, on my phone no less. I did end up going back to it when it finished, but I don't remember when, might play it again.
Also Light Platinum and Flora Skye deserve a mention, both of those were really cool too. Flora Skye had Mons from Gen 4 and that was really neat to me at the time.

I utterly DESPISE hacks that add PSS, Fairy type and every gen possible into one region because these games AREN'T BALANCED AROUND THIS and I don't trust an average fan's opinion of what difficulty is.

Revelation, Throwback and Polished just make these games complete with modern QoL that doesn't feel intrusive and eliminates the need for trading.

it's a twist on the actual pokemon games but it's pretty fun imo. it's essentially only pokemon battles and events but with permadeath and the pokemon you catch are available for the next runs. i guess the description may turn a lot of people off, but it's better than it sounds and very challenging

Super Mariomon. It genuinely felt like I was playing a brand new Pokemon release. The only downside is the dev battles are straight up just one-shots against you unless you abuse King Boo and there's some memes here and there which you need to ignore.

I'm not even sure exactly how to start playing romhacks. Can I just use the web browser for it?

As far as romhacks are concerned, I wouldn't mind one that follows with the following criteria:

- All Pokemon of that generation are possible to evolve/catch. If new 'mons are in there, I don't mind.
- Preferably while making Pokemon that only normally involve evolving via trades evolving in a different manner (Level up in X location, reach X level again, etc).
- All the HMs! I understand why a lot of them are gone, but I also like them even if it means keeping HM slaves. I personally think that the world should let you use HM moves so long as you have a Pokemon that can normally learn it, whether or not they actually know it.
- Doesn't have a story that's pushing an agenda onto me. If it does succeed in cracking me up with/at it though, I'm ok with it.
- Preferably one where IVs are fixed, especially at maximal value.

You Google the name of the romhack, get the IPS/BPS file, and patch a rom of either Red, Emerald, Fire Red, or Crystal since those are the most hacked games.

TrimUI Brick is solid as is the RG35XX-SP (Provided you do the button mod), RG34XX-SP (Provided you don't hate that it has sticks and a dumb top screen), and the RG34XX (It's literally just a GBA).

I've played Polished Crystal. It has too many changes to trainer teams/level/difficulty, has type changes and regional forms and shit like that. Far too much for me to consider it vanilla+.

There's a version without type changes. Everyone's line will be different, but for me it's the right amount of "plus" on Vanilla. Which is certainly heavier on the plus when you start looking at all the new areas they've added, but they feel very natural to me and like a fully realized Johto rather than just prettying up what's there already.

I cannot stress enough how good Super Mariomon was. Just enable level scaling and level caps and it's the perfect difficulty outside of the legendaries, postgame teams, and dev teams. Everything about the game feels like a polished release Nintendo themselves would authorize.

IIRC I think you can't mostly over color limitations and the sprite sizes are really squished up in the GBA era, I don't remember the exact size but something around the 300s.
DS is bigger in comparison, with more colors and details for that reason. You're better off getting new ones from scratch.

there are some damn good ones but i find so much guilty pleasure in snakewood that i end up actually enjoying how stupid it is and the pretty roundabout ways some of the more powerful fakemon are. it is obvious the dev just lost interest by the end but what's there and the shit you can also find just from going out of bounds or just mucking around in areas is neat.

So how does that actually work? I can't imagine actually playing through the entirety of Emerald over and over and over again, and I was worried about the runtime after seeing a trailer where one achievement was "Beat the game in 2.5 hours." That makes it seem like the average run is gonna be 3-4 hours at least, which feels like it'd be a lot for a roguelike with the mechanical depth of Pokemon and wants you to replay it a bunch.
