I wouldn't call it integral to the game. I think, especially in large parties, it's fine to split into groups and make it up on your own paths/time. To then get punished for being the first group up would feel unfair and unneeded. If it was just for base game though, party of four, I'd say you should be trying to get everyone up together, when possible.

I just don't see the appeal in adding mods that remove challenging aspects of the game. A big part of this game's fun is the challenge, the emerging options you are presented with and the decisions which you make according to them. For example in this scenario, you are encouraged to look for the remaining scouts and try to help them up, you'll get hungry either way. Removing that, just completely takes that dynamic away and staying at the top has no downsides.

Yeah, it's quite annoying. You can often 'carry' a 4th item by holding it in your hands and throwing it forward as you go, but this bug stops you from doing that little trick.
I think it happens when you press E to pick up something, but at the same time you're pointing into a climbable surface. So the game puts the thing in your hands and at the same time it places you into climbing mode, creating this problem.
Anyways, I guess you can avoid this by making sure you're not looking at a climbable surface when picking something up.
