Ok so once upon a fucking time, there was chick called the radiance. She's a goddess and a moth, and said "fuck all other bugs, only moths get to be cool and have higher brain function". But then there was this other god, the Pale King, who came along with his wife who isn't that important frankly, and said "fuck the radiance, I wanna be top god so I'm gonna give all the bugs higher brain function so they worship me". And it worked. But the the radiance was mad, and started infecting people who remembered her with zombie aids to make them her slaves. So Pale King destroyed all records of the radiance and probably did some population purges. And then everything was fine.
Until someone stumbled upon a statue of the radiance that was missed, so the zombie aids are back. Pale King has a new plan, a permanent fix this time. "Let's just kill the bitch", he says, and so he and his wife have a million billion kids who are then subjected to some horrible process which turns them into empty shells that can be filled up with the Void (radiance's one weakness) to make the perfect Radiance-killing bioweapon. But none of the million billion kids actually end up perfectly empty so they won't work. One gets close, he gets called the Hollow Knight, but he ended up having a functional brain so that's no good. So new plan, let's shove all the zombie aids into the Hollow Knight and then lock him in an airtight room.
To make the lock strong enough he needs 3 people to go to sleep forever to be magic seals. 2 say yes, but one says "Only if you fuck me". And that's how Hornet was born.
A bunch of time passes. One of the rejected Million Billion kids blunders into the town just as the airtight seal is coming loose, (actual spoilers)and turns out he's actually an empty shell (probably) so he kills the sleeping dudes and goes into the airtight room to kill the hollow knight and then the radiance like in the original plan. And that's the best ending of the game.

that's the story

All the bugs in hallownest were once in an enthralled by a moth spirit god that lived in their minds. A wyrm showed up and decided to make that place his territory and shed his monstrous form to become the pale king, and through his power granted sentience and individual wills to the bugs. This does seem to be dependent on something he changed in hallownest itself, as bugs that leave lose their memories. The bugs neglected and eventually forgot the radiance and started to worship the pale king instead, building his kingdom. The radiance, which still existed within the unconscious memory of the whole civilization, began to reassert itself by directly enthralling bugs. This was interpreted as a physical infection, as enthralled bugs started to secrete a golden mucous, but in fact spread randomly and could not be quarantined. The pale king pursued different methods to try to contain or destroy the infection, ultimately settling on the creation of a perfect vessel in which to contain the radiance's essence and thus minimize her influence on the world. He had thousands of children with another divine being, and cast the eggs of their consummation into a pit of abyssal darkness beneath his castle, believing that the void was bereft of conscious thought and therefore when those children hatched, they would be born cognitively "hollow" and thus unable to be controlled by the radiance. Eventually, he found one that seemed perfect, and took him to the palace to be prepared, while the rest of his children were sealed in the abyssal pit, although some (including the game's protagonist) found ways to escape. The chosen child, the hollow knight, was rigorously physically trained and magically prepared, and then, through means not disclosed, took the essence of the radiance within himself.

The king then had him sealed away inside of a "black egg", a chamber created from more void substance, and sealed that egg with a powerful spell that drew on the vital energies of a trio of collaborators which were placed into a permanent and immortal sleep, and themselves hidden away at the far reaches of the kingdom.

However, he made a mistake. The fondness he showed to the hollow knight during the preparation resulted in the hollow knight gaining enough emotion that the radiance was able to slowly eat away at his will, and eventually begin to influence the real world once more. This was somewhat limited by the black egg, but the egg also meant that nobody could get back in to deal with the hollow knight.

In the basic ending, the knight, your character, breaches the black egg, kills the hollow knight, and replaces him as vessel, taking the radiance within himself. Given that not even the ostensibly perfect vessel was able to contain her forever, we can anticipate that he too would eventually fail.

In the true ending, the hollow knight regains his lost memories of his origins and reconciles the tragedy of his creation with the potential of his current existence, and enters the mind of the hollow knight to challenge and destroy the radiance directly in her own dream realm. In the process, he sheds his physical form, and after the radiance is destroyed, he and the hollow knight return to the abyss in spirit, now at peace.

In the secret ending, the hollow knight learns of and indulges in a ritual being performed by traveling "god seekers" who exist in the dream realm to seek out and worship "gods", which by their definition is anyone with any significant power, although their true goal is to find a replacement for their own higher being to worship. It's implied that they're looking for the radiance. Through relentless ritual combat and defeating every "god", the knight sharpens his skills and his power. Eventually, he is able to reach the radiance through this divination process rather than needing to physically interact with the hollow knight at all, and destroys her utterly, all by himself, transforming into a monstrous god of darkness. This "shade lord", as the community calls him, then emerges back into the real world, which is probably very bad, but the infection is still cured, and the hollow knight actually survives and emerges intact from the black egg, so it's not all bad.

There's no indication that our player knight is in total control of the shade lord. Honestly nothing is known about the shade lord, it's all speculation. The only concrete thing we have to go on is a retcon. One of the descriptions for the shade lord was void given mind, but then that was intentionally deleted. So that does kind of imply our player knight gets consumed into an eldritch being and vanishes forever.

Our speculation that attuning to the shade lord might be bad are comments from the pale king about fucking around with void and the ending where all the radiance sunny D appears to all become void. As if the infection just becomes void. Personally I think this leads to a "No Eyes" situation where everyone who previously was Radiance infected now literally has no more mind to think. Lower than minimal brain activity. Just catatonic no thoughts head empty.
