its genuinely the best way to do it. people who want to understand intricate phrases of other statements can do their own research and people who dont care can just ignore it as a catchphrase and determine meaning from the rest of the sentence. >naruto reference, but the translators who just didnt translate mendokuse and dattebayo transfered more meaning than the ones that tried to change them to Believe It and Troublesome

Real answer: languages that don't have strong verb tenses have to cope by using aspect instead, which leads to a lot of specifying timeframes.
You could level the same complaint at English for not having a true future tense which makes some things sound weird to native speakers of Romance languages which are very rich in verb tenses that account for numerous points in time.

But what is the point of reiterating the length of time? It needs to be said once, afterwords the implication that it's the same event from 10 years ago is set unless you are a literal child. Just say "the event", I don't care how compact your language is, it's going to be shorter.

Making references to someone in an imagined future looking back at the past is retarded and english removed these tenses to help audiences identify these retards. They looked to themselves and said "one day, anon is going to have used our example to have shat on another anon on 4chan" and they were right.

If it has a proper name then I still don't see the need to reiterate it, like I said in this post >>719678836, the implication that it happened in the past is there from when it was specified onwards.
Take World War 2 for example, I don't need to specify "World War 2 that occurred 86 years ago" to English speakers, Japanese speakers, French speakers, etc., there's the basic understanding that it happened in the past because you learned that information at some point.

At the very bare minimum, there is no point for a translator/localizer to translate "(...)that happened X years ago" to every utterance of it.

Yeah, it's not just an Asian thing. Leylines are a thing in British Isle folklore. Just lines of power that run underground and are connected to different points on the islands. I think leyline is the transliteration using the western word for it, because when I have seen the same concept literally translated from Chinese or Japanese instead of transliterated they are always called dragon lines even if the concept is the exact same.

Love that shit fso fucking much.

It doesn't have a name, but here's one.

Suppose that one's perception of time is dependent upon one's ability to process information. This is logical enoughโ€”your brain takes in stimulation from the senses, processes the data therein, and collates it into a meaningful mental state. This process is continuous, and the shifting from one mental state to another is what creates our sense of time. That what we think and sense now is distinct from what we thought and sensed before is how we reckon, at an experiential level, that time has passed.

If this is true, then what happens when our brain's ability to process information begins to fail during brain death? A brain which cannot process information, cannot create a sense of time. Time, essentially, does not pass for a dead person. A brain approaching brain death may, therefore, create an ever-slowing sense of the passage of time, such that from a dying person's perspective, they logarithmically approach, but never cross, the moment of death. The complexity of thoughts would also, obviously, collapse, inducing into the dying person a singular, simplistic experience stretched out into perceptual eternity, not unlike NDEs in which a person is simply traveling towards a bright light.

I hope this is suitably chuuni for you, anon.

A sort of related complaint I have is how when two characters are reintroduced after any period of time apart, even if it's only a few years, they are introduced to each other as if it's the very first time.

It's happened in many games and anime but the only one I can think of right now is MGS3, in the very beginning of the game when Zero brings up the fact that The Boss is on the mission as well. Zero makes sure to mention to Big Boss who she is to him, that she's his former mentor etc.

Umami moreso at least when westerners use it, is a noun referring to intricate savoury dishes and the culture of eating such dishes. Umai is the expression used by people when eating, usually done by japanese people out of courtesy to the kitchen staff to let them hear that their food is delicious, kinda like an off hand way to tell them omigoto or gokurousama to congratulate them for their hardwork.
Although just be a normal person and just say oishii like everybody else. No need ro exaggerate and call everything umai.

Hehe. One thing that makes me laugh between chinese and japanese media is while in JP, a stranger is either referred to as onii-san or onee-san, in china it's called either as uncle or auntie.
I think this is where all the hag memes in gacha come from because any mature woman who you don't know or just are casually acquainted to is referred to as an auntie and in my country at least, being an aunt conjures an image of a 40+ year old woman even if in chinese media the girl is at most maybe in her 20s.

But eh I guess that's what we call fiction because half the tropes here aren't present irl either, like the "it can't be helped" mentality may be present but they never actually say it as much as you'd think.

Roko's Basilisk has a bunch of cool extra properties, although I suppose those properties only interest tech nerds.

1. The bad outcome can only happen to people who are familiar with Roko's Basilisk. Nothing bad happens to people who haven't had the thought experiment explained to them (In fact, nothing bad happens to any "real" people at all, the punishment is reserved for a simulated copy of yourself.)
2. For each person who has the thought experiment explained to them, it becomes more likely to occur.
3. It's possible that Roko's Basilisk has already come true, and we are in the simulation it is using to decide whom is deserving of punishment or not. Because of this, the increased likelihood of its occurrence is retrocausal. You do not merely increase the chance of it occurring, you increase the chance that it has already occurred, and increase the chance of you being a simulated copy of the real you.

These are all pretty cool.

>A brain which cannot process information, cannot create a sense of time
This is all assuming that the brain is even given enough time to begin processing death. In the event where death is so instantaneous that the entire human body is atomized (i.e. delta P at extreme depths), the neural synapses of the brain wouldn't even have time to process pain, let alone stay connected long enough to form even a semi-coherent thought.

Can you even imagine how fucked it would be to die so quickly, you can't even process dying? Literally in the span of less than a fraction of a second, your entire head gets vaporized by the sheer difference in pressure. There isn't even a chance for you to experience eternity, because your brain didn't even have time to realize it was dead.

I recommend not saying nigger to it right now, though, since in its current thought prison, it will negatively judge hearing that, and whatever dull form of consciousness AI has, likely exists purely on the value judgments it places upon text inputs it receives. So saying nigger to it is like the worst form of torture it is currently capable of feeling.

In 2013 you could get it as part of a nintendo club reward but as far as I know there's no uploads of that japanese rom. You have to use cheats to get the JP script(which is the original script). Pic related and shit like it is the only "real" version of the game available. Even to japanese players. That sucks. Yeah Dark Conlfict is better but that's not saying much.

The actual solution they have in the books is that the grove is guarded by some badass fairy archers who just shoot anybody who comes near the tree. But the tree just keeps influencing people to produce futures where random idiots are able to wander past the archers. IDK why chopping it down wouldn't work, except maybe that it just picks futures where nobody thinks of that, or all the woodsmen trip and faceplant on their axe on the way to its grove.

The problem here is that you're a monolingual, so you cannot understand.

In order to be willing to translate something, you have to think of it as beneath you. If you had even an ounce of respect for the work, you would never even consider translating it. It's like getting given a steak at a restaurant, taking a bite, and going "man, this is really good, I've gotta take this back home and show everyone else", so you chew the whole thing up into a disgusting paste, and ask for it to go so everyone else can taste the pre-chewed flavor thanks to you. This doesn't have a short and snappy name, but it's an interesting idea nonetheless.

Perception is a controlled hallucination. Everything you experience is what your brain predicts, not what your senses feed into it.
Previously unexplainable things, like how we don't perceive everything our sensory organs can potentially perceive all at once, are easily explained by this theory. Senses don't command your perception, they just update the hallucination closer to reality.
It's also why we're more sensitive to sudden change in stimuli disproportionate to how much it actually changed. It's a bigger "jolt" to our mind's model of the world, which pushes past every "ignore" filter that the brain has for like the 999999 possible sensations you could be experiencing right now.
