Wrong, retard. Until the invention of the automatic weapon, and even then for a while, bayonets were necessary because a guy with a gun could very easily get run down and killed.

Bayonets are what truly killed melee. Before that, you needed dedicated "Ward off Cavalry" Pikemen, and thus in turn dedicated "Anti Pikeman" soldiers like Rodeleros or Doppelsoldners.

When the shooty men became capable of defending themselves, there was finally no reason to keep pikes around anymore.
