Prices are only high because the hinges break so easily and replacing that part of the shell isn't something most people can do. Also none of the replacements you can buy online will last for more than a year before breaking again.

Yellow screen happens to a lot of old electronics, especially ones in Japan. Probably something about the humidity. When the screens are in good condition they're easily the nicest Nintendo ever put out until the Switch OLED.

I have an old 3DS XL, not the new. I also haven't been paying attention to the prices. How much are they? A few hundred isn't so unreasonable that I can't afford it. Though it would be a bit silly for a portable that sold so well and went out of print less than 10 years ago

I got a normal XL specifically for kid icarus uprising, which I enjoyed. Got a few other physical games for it but barely played any of them.
Then I hacked it, loaded it up with a shitton of games that looked halfway interesting, and didn't really touch it again since that's typically a death sentence for any of my gaming devices. ADHD option paralysis is a bitch. Gotta try out 10 games that all look interesting at once so I can't stick with any one of them.
Maybe it's that I got older, but I distinctly remember having MUCH, MUCH more fun with vidya when I only had a very small selection of games to choose from. In terms of enjoyment I got way more out of my GBC with only a handful of games than my DS and 3DS with everything pirated.
Then again I haven't hacked my Switch and apart from a few good games didn't really enjoy it so maybe modern gaming just sucks.

I'm at that point now (took my until my 30s) and it feels good to just play whatever. I have a massive backlog that is impossible to get through in a lifetime so I let go of the notion that I need to play them all, even the games I paid for. Makes me actually have fun with games again. Sometimes. Even played through Oracle of Ages on an emulator on my phone recently and it was great.
That does mean my handhelds get no love anymore since I almost exclusively play on PC nowadays.
