for modern gaming it was 2013 with the ps4 and xbox one, I saw the industry heading in a direction I didn't like and older games looked more interesting than the newer ones coming out so I switched to PC and never looked back.
Been playing on emulators the games that interest me along with the occasional new release.

Same here. Still love vidya, but AAA been creatively bankrupt for years now. Just sterile open worlds, checkbox designs, and bloated budgets chasing movie envy. Meanwhile, indies and retro still hit like they’ve got soul. Give me jank passion projects over another live-service husk any day.

As I'm getting into my 40s, I'm slowly realizing that it's not that I've lost my passion, it's just less things seem magical to me. I love picking up new games, but usually by hour 4, I've pretty much "got the gist" and if it's something less than a C+ or B-, I usually don't find the game fun enough to keep plowing through. When I was younger, it was way easier for me to want to spend 200+ hours on a 60 hour game cause I would just get lost in that one game. Now everything seems the same. It's getting worse day-by-day.

i still like games but i've gotten way less interested in multiplayer games ever since devs started focusing on grinding for player retention. battle passes and horrendously slowed down player progression are turning mp games into unpaid labor instead of sandboxes where you dick around with other people. devs also use seasons as an excuse to release half-assed games with the promise of fixing them later
