What is an indie game, exactly?

Indie is just short for independent. If they have a publisher they are not indie. It has nothing to do with size. Half-Life 2 is an indie game.

A lot of what is commonly called indie is more accurately something like AA if you want to classify them as something. Lower budget, smaller dev team, more creative freedom to do what they want, but has received outside funding to help with that development
