I've always said that Dark Souls 1 actually isnt as non linear as DS2. And thats exactly and actually a good thing if you understand dark souls level design, it couldnt be as tightly designed otherwise.
But because retards and bots have zero critical capacity of their own. What they appeal to are certain broadly reinforced "characteristics" inbued with "inherent value" that nobody can actually demonstrate under any remote scrutiny, which is why they rely on the sheer reinforced used and application of it being something "good" to in a sort of weird confirmation bias way, reinforce particular games theyre already predisposed to.
Hence "non linear! can go out of order a bit!" is enough for a game and its world design to be "good".
A similar phenomenon occurs with "freedom" and Breath of the Wild.
I say all this as someone whos favourite game of all time is Dark Souls 1.
