The vehicle sections are probably the worst chapters in HL2. If Highway 17 didn't have the bridge section, it would be viewed as just another Water Hazard.

Highway 17/Sandtraps is genuinely the peak. It's not just bridge, all the little stops are well made. >the house with the zombie jumpscare >the house with roller mines >the house where you get ambushed by Combine >the crane

Laidlaw was actually asked about this via email way back in the day and he said they intended the gap to be a week or so and regretted it wasn't communicated very clearly. I'd argue you should be able to infer it from the city being nearly empty and Mossman somehow ending up the in Arctic in the time Gordon was out though.
