Good boss fights and good visual variety. Movement is responsive and the soul system works as intended. Filling out your map is a great idea, but navigation is very tedious, especially in a blind playthrough.
I think if they wanted a tighter and more focused game, they would have been capable of making it. The creators were probably fine with excessive backtracking and somewhat underwhelming exploration. I think the intended effect was to make players satisfied that they completed it, but in the process of accomplishing that they relinquished control over a lot of mini-victories the player could have experienced along the way.
I really liked it, of course. Its competition is Environmental Station Alpha and La-Mulana, so it just can't live up to comparsions. Essentially an action game with too many wrong turns.
