"Overreaction" is just a clash of western and eastern cultures. Japanese people overreact in movies (and anime, reality TV, etc.) because they are very strict with their emotions most of their lives. It's a form of escapism from societal expectations and stress and goes back to the earliest japanese movies.
It does need the viewer to attune to its unique flow, but I don't think it should be as difficult as many people make it out to be so I guess it's just a cultural filter. It may require some additional patience from western viewers and I assume many are not willing to give that for a movie.
I would have recommended Hidden Fortress, as it's perhaps my favorite japanese movie of all time, but since in this reply chain someone already said they've seen it (who could have been you), I can recommend this picrel as another good entry into somewhat more modern japanese movies.

If you absolutely can't enjoy these (Hidden Fortress and Lonely Heart for example) then japanese media might not be for you and that's genuinely okay. Not every kind of movie is meant to be for everyone.
