The game was shit, and the movie is even more shit. If the protagonist died from drowning I could have forgiven the schmaltzy writing and weak plot, it would've been a much better movie about regret.

It's a trannylation thing. Japanese is a language with very low context, which is why you can make comedy skits around one guy thinking his friend is a murderer and the other guy talking about swatting flies. If you imagine the "who's on first" sketch applied to every single aspect of life in Japan, you'd begin to have an understanding of how much is left out and requires clarification.

In English, the piece is first examined and all the clarification you need is added to the first line. This results in what feels like lots of meaningless padding to dialogue, because in English it's instantly spoiled.

Honestly, I think it's a nice idea. The concept is surprisingly simple and solid.
As long as it's not some 2-3 hour movie, it has a very good chance of being a really good short form horror like picrel.

This is a good post and I would welcome further elaboration.
Does this also explain the trend of Japanese media expounding heavily on obvious concepts like "killing is bad", or is that a cultural rather than a language thing?

I get "killing is badong" vibe every time I see Japanese media

Well, some of that is because the Japanese only partially have souls, so they need a logical underpinning to things like crime. It's genetic, rather than cultural.
Anonymous No.719704841 >>719704894
>>719704570
Ah yes them teaching their children in media that having values is something that doesn't need to be contested is because they have no soul unlike the western child who truly understands everything perfectly and thats why he needs to be exposed to either tranny propaganda or how fast the belt must come off when dealing with things you don't like.Fuck off

I didn't say they didn't have souls, seanig. You probably don't though, depending on the favela.

"Overreaction" is just a clash of western and eastern cultures. Japanese people overreact in movies (and anime, reality TV, etc.) because they are very strict with their emotions most of their lives. It's a form of escapism from societal expectations and stress and goes back to the earliest japanese movies.
It does need the viewer to attune to its unique flow, but I don't think it should be as difficult as many people make it out to be so I guess it's just a cultural filter. It may require some additional patience from western viewers and I assume many are not willing to give that for a movie.

I would have recommended Hidden Fortress, as it's perhaps my favorite japanese movie of all time, but since in this reply chain someone already said they've seen it (who could have been you), I can recommend this picrel as another good entry into somewhat more modern japanese movies.

If you absolutely can't enjoy these (Hidden Fortress and Lonely Heart for example) then japanese media might not be for you and that's genuinely okay. Not every kind of movie is meant to be for everyone.

"Killing is bad" in media is older than both of us. Ever heard of comic books? What a bizarre thing to point out.

Yeah that was me, I liked The Hidden Fortress. I guess I kinda subconsciously gave that a pass in terms of acting since it's an old movie in black and white compared to the Godzilla example I used, but there was plenty to like about the The Hidden Fortress anyway. I appreciate the recommendations along with everyone else's, I imagine the Kurosawa stuff is a no-brainer but I haven't gotten around to them yet besides this.

I see. Yeah, Kurosawa movies are a must see in the japanese movie industry, although not all of them are to my liking (I personally disliked Throne of Blood for example).

While we're on the topic of Godzilla, I heavily recommend Shin Godzilla (picrel). It's a present day societal commentary on what would the insanely circumstantial japanese government (bureaucracy) do if such an entity actually appeared in modern Tokyo.
I think it's an extremely good movie about modern japanese governments as a whole and it somewhat dials back the overexplanation a bit. If someone is interested in modern japanese life, then I can also easily recommend this movie.
