The best approach is to just play it.
Once you're over the initial unlock wall which you do by just playing and leveling up, your main grinds are EXP and MM.
EXP has a really.. questionable allocation rate.
Basically, every time you finish a wave, your Towers receive EXP as a resource for permanently unlocking upgrades. It doles it out according to how much in-round money you invest in that type of tower. So if you place down a dart monkey and it's your only tower, it gets all the EXP. If you place down 10 dart monkeys and 1 boomerang, the dart will get most of the EXP. If you place down one leveled-up dart and a normal boomerang, the dart will get more EXP because you invested money in its upgrades.
So EXP grind for the most part is just using a lot of one tower or using it often so it steadily gets there over multiple rounds.
Then there's Monkey Money, which is a bitch at first, but smooths out hugely as you progress.
The first and most important part is that once you reach a high enough level, you start gaining Monkey Knowledge. One of the earliest points in the Magic Knowledge tree gives a raw +10% Monkey Money. It's free except for the points themselves, unlike most Monkey Knowledge.
After that, it just comes down to playing the game a lot and avoiding wasting MM.
>Do Maps you haven't cleared, avoid replaying
>Do Dailies (the normal one is almost always super easy and the challenge one is usually a puzzle you can try to solve OR just look it up, someone posts the solution every day)
>Do Events, mainly Odysseys
And as you keep going, it'll smooth out.
As for spending...
