How the actual fuck do you loose 100 gigs of bloat? Like how abysmal was the optimization in the first place? Or is the "update" just deleting all the 4k textures leaving the standard ones?

repacks are compressing data into an archive that is then decompressed by an installer, it is not in a playable state.

They made the game for multiple systems/haradware and didn't bother to use ps5 specific things until now for whatever reason.

cause game was deliberately bloated as a hostile attempt to squat the ssd space and literally displace competing live service games.

I wonder how long the ssd reduction has been planned for now. The only thing ps gamer play is call of duty and sports games.

At one point they talked about having larger file sizes leaves less rooms for other games, forcing players to choose between CoD or playing different games. The idea was players would hesitate and keep playing CoD so they wouldn't have to download it again later.

Drop 4k textures because PS5 can't handle them anyway. That's instant 40-60 gb. 4k textures is the reason games are so big nowadays.
Then convert flac audio to 128 kbut mp3 because sonyfags won't notice any difference.

>How the actual fuck do you loose 100 gigs of bloat
As the article said, the assets were uncompressed so they basically occupy the full space, and since the ps5 has a dedicated chip to uncompress files fast, they used it, plus most games nowadays, besides being on an ssd, use a technique of placing the same files repeatedly throughout the game's folders so they're closer to the level's files and thus can be accessed faster, which obviously this increases the size exponentially.
Remove those two idiocies and you can shave tons of storage requirements, it's really not that much of wizardry, but it seems, as other anons pointed out, this was a deliberate move to take as much space from the ssd as posible, so you don't feel compelled to uninstall the game from you're console.

Can someone explain to me why this shit was used for so long, even decades after x264 and 265 and equivalents were a thing? Heck, I'm fairly sure it's still used.
I don't get it.

To be fair, I'm, on PC, and I'm at a point where I have to decide which game to remove out of the dedicated 2TB SSD.
No, I won't buy 4TB at the current price point, i swear SSD prices are the same as 4 years ago, it's ridiculous.

Titanfall didn't forget, they realised there was a large playerbase on PC with dual-core CPUs and while on console they had 6 shit core that they could easily dedicate 1 to decompressing audio, on PC it was causing hitching on NEETboxes where the tendie money hadn't got them to quad-core yet.

I guess because it's a double edged sword. You may be reluctant to uninstall, but once you cross that threshold you're now going to be less likely to reinstall. They've probably been looking at their player counts and all the telemetry and have come to the conclusion that their bullshit is resulting in fewer sales of new DLC. So time to be consumer friendly for a minute until the plebs get complacent again.

optimization my ass. The reason the file size were so big is because you could carry old DLC like skins and stuff to the next game. But now with this new COD game the hundreds of dollars you spent on DLC are gone.

This is particularly bad on PS5 because you can only use Nvme's that are 5GB/s or faster and these cost a $100 per TB.

On PC you can still use slow ass SSD's because you can circumvent it with lots of ram but at the same time this is what causes stutter and shader compilations that last like 20 minutes but even if you had a really fast SSD it still would be a waste because like 95% of PC games are not even optimized for direct storage anyway.

This is a fucking meme. FFVII Rebirth PC release had the memeNVME 9000GB/s requirement. Which I do have. But as drunk as I was, it turns out I installed it on the nvme drive I use in its tiny box as an USB key, hooked up to a random USB port. Meaning for like 20h I played at USB speeds before I noticed it was on the wrong drive.
Then I transferred everything properly on the NVME drive running at gazillions GB/s hooked to the dedicated slot on my motherboard.
It changed absolutely nothing.
No loading speed increase, no memeshaders compilation speed increase, no better framerate,
Nothing.
