Because Facebook decided to bet it all on their Metaverse shit and lost. That's it, that's like 90% of why VR slumped over and died.
Giant-ass company that owns like 2/3rds of all of VR banks billions on the metaverse and got so shitter-shattered that the entire market was like "what the shit just happened??? ABORT ABORT ABORT" while Facebook then rolled back or canceled all their projects.
Two things have come up so far that could've possibly saved VR: Apple's AVP and Valve's Index 2.
Apple releasing that shitheap of a headset and doing the "Apple thing" by making it super proprietary didn't help, which I find really funny because Apple needs to eat shit more often and it was 100% their fault. They could've saved themselves by adding(/selling) controllers and allowing the AVP access to the normal VR library, but nope, Apple's gonna Apple.

Standalones were the next big thing, the thing all the VR companies wanted to hop onto, and the Quest 2 was a huge hit, but Facebook eating it over the metaverse shit scared everyone off.
Even China was starting to put out some decent standalones and even THEY ran off when FB got wrecked instead of capitalizing on the void in the market.
