>genre is called Metroidvania
>most games take after the Castlevania side over Metroid
Melee combat is kinda overrated, I wanna shoot niggas.

>Metroidvania
>literally none of them play like Metroid and are all variations of SOTN
I hate how retarded people are.

I read someone say that the term "metroidvania" wasn't actually a mashup of the two titles, but a term for the castlevania games that took the metroid formula. I don't know if that's true but I agree with you, I'd like to see more straight up Metroid clones.

You're both retarded. The name Metroidvania originally referred to the Castlevanias that played like Metroid instead of the classic platformer Castlevanias.
>>719724869
You're correct.

Seriously. I just want to explore and collect shiny new toys that let me go to new areas where I can find new toys. I don't fucking care about making numbers go up.

It's still the wrong name then, because most "metroidvania"s are closer to just castlevania instead of said metroidvania

Funny how that's not at all how it's used now huh?

I've never seen a "metroidvania" game that's a simple level based platformer.

I really don't understand why there aren't more Metroid clones. Metroid is a much simpler form of the genre, and should therefore be easier to make. Is this another instance of people conflating complexity with quality?

What's the difference between castlevanias and metroids? Don't you explore a world with powerups and backtracking in both?

Anyone looking forward to Moadra? I played the demo a while ago and it was cool, though I think the character moves a bit too fast

And I've never seen a metroidvania game like this >>719725031
and no, "beating the boss to unlock another door" doesn't count

How many have you actually played?

Dead cells, carrion, blasphemous, rogue legacy, animal well, dust, all the castlevanias and metroids.
>steam page unironically has "jedi: fallen order" on metroidvania front page

SOTN was shit
Anonymous No.719726180
>>719725290
No, pre-SOTN were classic level-based platformers. With the exception of Simon's Quest being guidebook bait.
And the reason it's Metroidvania instead of just being called a Metroid-clone is that SOTN also added a bunch of RPG shit.

It doesn't matter.

I wouldn't call it shit, but it definitely ain't my cup of tea. The inverted castle can fuck off though.

It's not like you could call them Castlevania-likes, because most Castlevania games are linear action-platformers.

glad im not the only one who noticed. i still play through at least 1 metroid every year cause nothing else has come along that feels as good as that. closest i can think of are mummy demastered and guns of fury but i really dont like either of those.
