Genesis and SNES were considered retro around the year 2000 but they weren't as old as the PS2 is now

Modern games still borrow many elements from the ps2 or straight up feel the same as ps3 which is why Gen 6-7 will never be considered retro Unless game design changes as a whole besides “wow look at how many pores you can see on the characters face”

Super Ghouls n' Ghosts (1991) was considered retro when it was ported to Sega Saturn in 1998. Ocarina of Time also from 1998 was considered retro when the Gamecube was relevant. Retro is not something that applies to everything after a passage of time, it's a specific point in gaming history.

Retro means "imitation of an older style"; pixel indie games can be considered "retro" in that respect.

N64 and PS3 had more differences than just the time in between. The game design of N64 games and PS3 games was wildly different and more than just looking prettier. PS3 controls were basically solidified in all game development and nearly every game to this day shares the same controls

Retro means deliberately outdated design, which is why the PS2, PS3, PS4, PS5, Wii U, Switch (1 and possibly 2 depending on how the mouse pans out) and all Xbox consoles were all retro consoles when they released, since they all called back to trends that had passed by several years, if not decades.
Mouselook easily surpassed attempting to navigate free camera controls with analog sticks, but consoles decided to stick with it anyway. The only non-retro consoles released after the 2000s were the Dreamcast, Gamecube and Wii,

i actually own both of those games still sealed, picked them up for maybe $15 each just because i thought it was neat they were still sealed, never opened them because i knew the games were shit.

The wiimote is unironically retro. Holding it sideways is meant to invoke the NES, which works with many of the retro style 2D platformers the Wii had like Kirby's Return to Dreamland and New Super Mario Bros. Wii.
