spelunky is the obvious "name filed off and changed just enough" game. I actually am shocked they didn't get any legal request for a name change, since the names and premises are so similar it's easy to get them confused. I for one for the longest time thought they were part of the same series.

Yes, spelunky more or less copied spelunker series, and struck gold when the original series laid dormant.

Different name. The original one predates the goddam Famicom. 1983. Was one of the earliest platform generation. Infamously hard. You took "realistic fall damage", which means you died from falling 3 pixels.

Weird thing is that in Japan it did well enough to get a surreal anime adaptation.

I'm gunna be honest I've mostly just played classic. On the computers in my highschool.
I did some cmd fuckery to make myself a system admin so that it would actually save my files after I logged out. I left the login info for that account on a sticky note under one of the computer desks and I hope some kid found it by now.

I don't know what it is but I'm fucking terrible at classic Spelunky. Spelunky 1 and 2 I've done everything there is to do in those, but the old one I've never even finished a run. Feels too janky and broken.

There's the Spelunky 2.5 mod I guess, revamps the whole game
