Are gaming laptops like the msi raider 18 hx ai actually worth it for someone who wants something close to a gaming pc but does not have the room for one? Or is it all just a big scam?

No.

Laptops are pretty decent for gaming but you need to know what to expect and how to take care of your laptop
I recommend turning off turbo boost if you ever get one, in my opinion it just makes too much heat and noise while the performance loss for turning it off is small

they're shit compared to desktops but if you really can't get a desktop for whatever reason it's still better than not having a pc at all. I used a gaming laptop that I got for a great price used for a couple years and it treated me great, I even sold it for a $50 profit when I was ready to buy a desktop

Laptops used to be shit when it comes to gaming but it hasn't been the case for some years now
They're not as good as a proper gaming pc, true, but you do get decent hardware in a portable package with a 1080p screen
I consistently run a bunch of games on high settings 60+ fps on my LoQ and I think it was a good purchase for what I expected
Any complaints about people "frying their gaming laptop" involve them trying to run Cyberpunk or something at high detail high FPS and never monitoring the temps.

Don't be retarded, but even if you are it's still better than a console, I guess.

All laptops are a scam, you can't keep them in your lap. They get too hot. You gotta put them on a table.

I got about 8 solid years of gaming out of my Precision M6800, so my advice is to buy a used workstation laptop that used to be used for professional grafics instead.
Upgradable GPU's need to be a thing in consumer level laptops ffs.

Is there any particular brand that's best?

it's inferior. If you have no space you have no space. make sure you have space for vents. And remember that a laptop version of the card is NOT the fucking same as the desktop.

They still are shit, but they're just usable shit that will roast your balls in seconds if given a chance that cost more and do less rather than the complete failures they used to be.

i like laptops because i move residences every few weeks. if you don't move then getting a laptop is just fucking retarded. get a pc.

MSI laptops tend to be some of the most overdesigned and highest performing especially for the price, but man they are flimsy and tempermental
if you're a nerd and know your way around troubleshooting and building and maintaining a gaming pc then you'll probably be fine, but the biggest misconception about gaming laptops is that they're an easier form of PC compared to desktops. The opposite is actually true, if you're thinking about getting a laptop specifically because a desktop is daunting and you're not willing to fix problems with it or maintain it, then a gaming laptop will be nothing but problems for you.

Personally I'm a fan of asus's gaming laptops, the caveat being that you are basically on your own with software and are relying on FOSS to control your fancy computer properly.
Lenovo's legion laptops are a pretty close runnerup.
A common problem with gaming laptops that afaik none of them have solved is that the fans on them are all loud as fuck.
