Expecting Krogan to assimilate to Alliance culture is an impossible task, sterilization was always the correct choice.

The temptation to take pity on your defeated enemy is one of the most insidious forms of the evil inclination.
Its one thing to maybe try and correct their evil ways out of charity if you can, but this is a positive thing you are doing and in no way should you compromise your safety to do so. But to feel sorry for them after they tried to kill you? That is not a good trait, that is not morality, that is literally evil at work trying to confuse you.

The Salarians are the ones who fucked things up in the first place for use as shock troops. However, its proven that if Wrex and Eve are alive especially, the Krogan will not repeat their past mistakes - they join the galactic community with Wrex, Eve, and Shepard as heroes around which to build their society and I think there was something about naming his first kid after Sheploo. Its obvious that Wrex is a particularly smart and enlightened member of the species as he can't be tricked about the genophage (you need to kill him if he's alive) AND if he's alive Mordin, who made the thing in the first place will not agree to only "fake" the cure. If Wreav is in charge and Wrex and Grunt are dead, and especially if Eve also died, Mordin can be prevailed upon to "fake" the cure, but otherwise no chance. So its really an environmental thing

The Genophage does not cause infertility as in an inability to achieve conception, it causes stillbirths. Lots and lots of stillbirths. A tad bit more tragic than just being infertile.

It wasn't removed, it was reduced to about the same levels as other council races. Krogan lay like a thousand eggs a year so the calibrated the genophage to make them able to have an average of one viable birth per year instead of a thousand. Overbreeding was an issue that is mentioned in the game, but it's rather hidden as it makes the issue more grey and Bioware had decided by 3 that they didn't want it grey. In a planet's description, it's said that the planet was given to krogan and they overpopulated without care and trashed the place. Got their gibs and destroyed it. They were unable to keep their numbers in check, they don't have the ability to govern themselves.

And even good boy Wrex starts talking about taking what they're owed and it takes Eve nagging him for him to recant and say they'll ask nicely first. So even with the idea that the two of them will somehow control the rest of the race, one of those two is still barely in check himself. However, one thing to keep in mind is the female Krogan perspective; it's quite likely they'd be pressuring the males to not be stupid too but if it hasn't been working up to now, who knows.

I like the Krogans more than the races they may wipe out so it's a risk I'm willing to take, plus it's possible they get rid of the Batarians so that's a plus.

I doubled down on sterilizing them in the third game, and since Ashley had ganked Wrex in the third game the leader of the Krogan in ME3 was too stupid to figure out what we'd done.
