What went so right with the Steam Deck?

Certainly not that lcd display. That looks bad, at least on your picture.

Looking at all the other PC handles devices just out of curiosity and only the Steam deck has a track pad. Why is that? Seems rather essential especially if you're planning to browse the web on it.

Yeah the OG LCD screen is dogshit. But I'm waiting for Deck 2 anyways. Still the best console killer on the UMPC market.

Because Valve actually designed the Deck for PC games, because people at Valve ACTUALLY PLAY GAMES. Meanwhile nearly every other UMPC is manufactured to a checklist created by out of touch suits.

For me? the ergonomics. It's the only handheld that doesn't give me hand cramps after a while

My CS2 inventory skyrocketed to 200k so I treated myself to a free steam deck after selling 5 stickers. I already modded my back cover and I'm already thoroughly enjoying it. I was shocked how light it felt. I'm a little disappointed in the build quality, but the sound and visuals on the 512gb oled is insanely good.

kek first thing I played was FEAR and Condemned. I really get it now, the steam deck feels like actually getting away from everything and just playing a game again without distractions. I'm enjoying single player games again and the stream feature on it was pretty good too. Playing SH2 remake maxed out and it looks amazing on the oled deck. Sure, there's probably other portable systems out there far superior to the deck atm, but I'm choosing the steam deck because of the software and trackpads, also the look is clean as fuck

emulation, single-players games, lazing on the couch or bed playing a kino single player game, ability to stream from your super power PC with low latency if you internet is good, steam OS is kinda neat, it's worth it on sale or if you plan to heavily mod it and emulate

no it didn't
it's a low volume product that still managed to kickstart a form factor and linux for gaming

Proton compatability layers and Linux increasing in users.
>But the Steam Deck didn't sell like crazy
That wasn't the point of the steam deck. The point was to make linux a viable competitor so if windows ever went full retard (like they are now) Steam doesn't have to worry about getting yeeted from "muh walled garden ecosystem"

If I'm not mistaken, Steam actually takes a loss on the deck.
Solid strategy, good move all around.
Wouldn't be surprised if they become a linux distro hub or create a git hub equivalent in the future.

deck would absolutely shit itself if it was a big volume product anyway, what they're doing is just too experimental
they're not nintendo, they can't bruteforce compatibility, proton and steamos needed work with a smaller sample first

LCD is fine. Backlight bleed sucks, but that's the norm with LCD.

You know you can USB-C hub those or Blutooth them, right? It's a PC, it's not hamstrung by the built-in controller.

yes, i know exactly what it is
that pic doesn't have any dongles or cables coming off it
if you're sticking peripherals onto it you're basically just going for a ship of theseus and might as well use a desktop because you're going to be at a disadvantage regardless because you're in the bottom 1% of hardware, only winning against laptop users with no mice

Gyro and flickstick actually makes it quite bearable. Not ideal, but I was able to do well with Scout, Heavy and Spy. Go check Solarlight's video on gyro controls.

For me, it's the dual trackpads and controller customization in general. Makes games and entire genres that were unplayable with a controller now playable, and allows me to tailor-fit the entire setup to my specifications. Any PC handheld not including dual trackpads is fucking up.

Controller customization on consoles is a joke. Zelda TotK lets you swap the jump button for an equally bad jump button - and that's it. Until consoles can catch up to Valve in this regard, I have 0 interest in buying another console or even controller.
