Assuming those are all two years before release, they were actually retarded because that was the height of the indie metroidvania craze. HK came after that but that only makes them more wrong and retarded. I'd say a couple years after HK is when it would be hard to get your indie metroidvania recognized if it was going to be any good.

Kickstarter was pushing a lot of games into success before Double Fine and Chris Roberts destroyed the idea of crowd funded games.
HK is a good game but they were also very lucky to get in right at that time, and then never need crowdfunding again. Technically Silksong is crowdfunded but it's pennies compared to HK sales.

those are reasonable takes, hollow knight's art direction would end up being a really big differentiator and that wasn't very obvious for a long time. at the end of the day 'just make good product' really is the end-all-be-all of things, but marketing certainly doesn't hurt, and nothing is good marketing like pretty screenshots.
the game reviewed well and sold far and away most of its copies after the sequel was announced and gave the first game a lot of free advertising.
