what do we think about the atelier ryza trilogy?
personally I think the story and characters work best in Ryza 1, Ryza 2 was mostly meh but it had a very emotional ending and 3 is the prettiest game of the three, but I feel like the story was too out there to really resonate with people. And Federica and the other kid were just kinda there.

I didn't make it through snoozefest 2. The genre shifted to be more slice-of-life which isn't anything unusual for Atelier. It was just a matter of expectations after the first Ryza.

Empel and Bos were the only good characters in the entire trilogy and they both had 90% of their stories told in the first game. The alchemy system was actually decent but all the other mechanics were beyond fucked and any semblance of game balance was given up on in the second game. 3's world looked good and had plenty of interesting landmarks but was brought down by there being zero gameplay reward for exploring; no decent treasure to find, materials are the same everywhere, and no bonus bosses whatsoever. It probably has the most forgettable music of any Atelier series. The combat system was dog shit and Hosoi is a delusional retard for thinking the combat was why Ryza was successful.

The Atelier are a turn based series of JRPGs focused on Alchemy. If you do something in combat, it's probably something you made in your alchemy lab earlier. The games used to be timed but later entries removed that aspect.

Overall I like the series. If I had to sum it up:
>Ryza 1 is like going to the beach for the first time. A lot of game elements were a "first" for me (crafting system, battle system, slice-of-life story)

Marie and Elie sold ~200k, the games between then and Arland were on a decline with Mana Khemia barely hitting 30k, Arland jumped back up to Marie numbers, then it declined again until Mysterious was doing Mana Khemia numbers again.
