failed a bunch of jova quests because the backtracking got too tedious. also probably not going to bother backtracking to seal the timeloops they put at the bottom of dungeons but lock behind meme crystals you don't have or put the last guardian behind a door locked with a meme stick you don't have. game really needed fast travel
Anonymous No.719761569
It's not particularly big brained. Just very enjoyable to have a game world you can discover on your own and with some intriguing mysteries. You have to explore nooks and crannies, some stuff can be a bit hidden, a lot of optional content and secrets. Not everything is immediately spelled out and instantly gratifying. A lot is conveyed through environmental storytelling, atmosphere, worldbuilding. There are a lot of puzzles you cannot immediately solve, but you just have to backtrack later once you find a hint or item elsewhere. A misconception is equating this sort of design with challenging, but it just means elegant and satisfying. It's not big brained, but it doesn't take you for an idiot.

It reminds me more of older RPGs with good exploration. Like STALKER, Witcher 1, Gothic, Morrowind. Or even point and clicks.

Only the combat, no puzzle hints. There are hints in the game world you can find.
>2) Is the game a survival horror type game where you try to find combat resources and save them up for combat?
No, it's melee combat so no ammo, you can find some consumables like medkits but they're mostly useless as the most efficient way to heal by stealing hp from enemies during combat.
It does have survival horror type puzzles though if you enjoy those.

It has a rally mechanic sort of like Bloodborne so it rewards aggression and tanking hits, but you have to time a button press with a visible build up of a white energy ring around your character
It's not bad, it doesn't have a lot of depth, but the encounters aren't the meat, the meat is the exploration and the atmosphere

I can appreciate the fact that they don't really shy away from atrocities being committed. You got a bunch of people being hung from a tree including a child. You wander into a house and see a soldier cleaning up what is implied to be a scene where a rape and then a murder took place. You have a woman essentially forced into being a comfort woman for the men stationed there. That is just the second area.

It's more certain side quests seem to have a time limit associated with them and the time limit seems to be when you clear acts since clearing acts slightly changes the world state, but sometimes you have to proceed forward with acts in order to clear a side quest that you started in the previous act. I beat Act 1, but so far the side quests that I left incomplete, because I couldn't find the solution at that point, haven't auto failed.
There was some side content that did kind of scream at me if I didn't do it now that the quest giver was very likely going to die in the near future like a woman who states that if she can't find her medication then she's likely doomed. Her medication is found nearby when exploring.

Frankly im the type of anon that thinks even SH2 combat gameplay is good, so my tolerance for weird/bad combat is pretty high, so i dont really care when people say the combat is bad. So this game looks interesting. Does it actually play like an action adventure or more souls-like? because I'm down for adventure if that's the direction of it. It's like when people make soulslikes they don't even understand what i was originally playing the games for. But i never liked this sub genre to begin with admittedly. I never 'got' the appeal outside the aspects i found appealing. The fact there are side quests leads me to believe it's actually of a different direction.

Just got to the Tower and wandering around the area, don't know if I can come back after I use the APC, but based on the puzzles here I should be able to? So far healing is kicking my ass. The game looks nice and the setting is very interesting. I would have bought it, but I'm having second thoughts due to the disconnect between the combat and the world. I don't even mind the souls like combat, but just the fact that there's military hardware lying around, trenches and machine guns, but the protag challenges the monsters in melee. I hope the reason is good at least.
Anonymous No.719776206

It's action adventure.
There are some souls-like traits but the focus is exploration and puzzle solving.

For people put off by combat part:
You can play on easy without any downsides like missing cheevos.
You don't get penalized for dying.
Enemies you killed before you died stay dead.
You don't lose any currency or experience.
All the story parts you solved between last checkpoint and your dead stay solved.

You'll get the explanation like halfway through the game if you manage to collect enough research objects for your journalist/scientist pall.
Heavy spoilers ahead.
'Demons' from other dimension are *VERY* hard to damage with conventional weapons while they are also agile and deadly.
It's mentioned in some ancient text that it took 8 days and 2000 dead soldiers to bring down one of them during the Calamity.
Then they had a great idea to start making weapons coated in remains of the demon body and it worked out well for them.

Halberd is really good in general, high speed, good reach, decent damage, and good AoE with it's charge attack. It's my go to weapon when I want to plow through the dungeon.

The combat is honestly just filler to the bulk of the game which is exploring and doing puzzles. I think the developers just put in combat because I think they were scared of how the reaction would be if there wasn't any combat.
Enemies for example only respawn when you leave an area but won't respawn when you die.

Combat has a few similarities with souls-borne+Nioh but the exploration, puzzles and quests have much bigger role.
It can become hectic sometimes because game compensates low enemy variety with mixed crowds of creatures that can fuck you up fast if you're just trying to ungabunga without a plan.
That said there are weapon skills, drone skills and you can switch to easy without any penalty.
Also if you do get killed the dead monsters don't respawn so you don't have to reply harder parts from the beginning till you get through in one go.

It's not slower but somewhat methodical if you bump up difficulty to max (because inherently crowd control-focused, harsher on stamina management and more chaotic enemy patterns so you really alternate between mash mash mash and block/parry more than in souls where attack openings are more strict I think). It plays fairly uniquely honestly, don't go into it with the soulslike mindset. And you can adjust difficulty % down if you struggle.

I like how it has rpg elements, you have to actually talk to people to figure stuff out, has puzzles, and there are seemingly aliens and ww2 artillery but it isn't clear why yet, but you learn bits from items looted in the world.

it isnt even fair to call it a soulslike, if anything it has SOME combat similarities but that's about it. It's not the generic bonfire -> boss -> bonfire loop, even though there are "bonfires" (save recorders) which are just checkpoints. you do a lot of non-linear exploring.

Polearm is just way too busted, it has speed, range and AoE.
Dual Axe is fast, though predictably short range.
