I was thinking why it it flopped and then came back. The answer might be psychological:

Beginning of the first game makes you feel like you cracked open a baby seal's skull. Therefore you gave up and didn't want to play further.

I do not know why they made the second game, but they sold relatively well together because it was on sale "buy one get one free burger", even I fell for this. We humans are wired to hunt, even if those things we "hunt" are such unnecessary items like videogames.

Armored Core 2 and 3. The base games were fantastic but Another Age and Silent Line just failed to capture me, felt like a bland slog to play.

Fire Emblem Awakening, the pair up and second seal mechanics both seem awesome at first as you play you realize how both dramatically increase the potency of just building a single super unit. This is both the optimal way to play and the easiest but it's the most tedious and boring. It's all but required in lunatic
