Starbound
>Game is probably the most popular Terraria clone ever made
>Still actively has around 1k daily players each day
>Over 13k mods and apparently a surprisingly active modding scene
>Game has an open source port that allows you to fully modify literally any aspect of the game that's been out for over a year
>Nobody uses it
Why? I thought Open versions of games are modders dreams/paradise, like GZDoom, OpenMW, etc?

I am glad this game is coming back in popularity. It's No Man Sky Terraria, and that's AWESOME.

the game is terraria but worse in every aspect minus exploration. It's slower, less weapons, enemies are almost the same everywhere, feels less rewarding in every aspect overall.

>Why?
Game kind of looks like shit.
Terraria too.
They remind me of the RPG Maker games, with which 90%+ of the population will never engage [because they look like ass] but a subset of people will lap it up like they aren't a visual abomination.

Dogshit game that squandered all the potential it had by removing everything people were originally hyped for, adding something terrible that nobody asked for, and then having a revolving door of junior devs half-making things nobody asked for.
Mods are like a bandaid on a chainsaw wound.

Can't build shit in this because it's too detailed, while Terraria has just stylized enough blocks that you can build anything.

At any given time 20% of that 1k playerbase is probably playing the fetish mod starpounds and its other add-ons.

Building is so pointless because the player's gonna want to travel and use the ship as a base. It's like building in NMS; cool that it's there but utterly pointless.

Starbound or OpenStarbound? The major complaints about Starbound seem to be somewhat minute from differences between the Beta and Release version.

The Starbound beta genuinely seems a bit.....shit, but I think people liked the CONCEPT of the beta is good, for example in the release version there's a story, and the story is tied to progression, in the beta there is no story, and it is not tied to progression as a result.

The beta technically had more weapons, more tech, more lore, and an entirely different method of progression.

Which sounds good on paper, but a lot of what was in the Beta was actually unfinished and low quality bloat.

The beta had a temperature mechanic that was very poorly implemented, a lot of "Tech" seemed to have been artificial roadblocks to fake progression rather than it being progression, like being forced to beat a boss to unlock a sector of the universe which unlocks a specific tech, etc

The UI was shit, The Iconic weapon of the game called "matter manipulator" which is literally a futuristic item that can manipulate matter itself was worse than a stone pickaxe and a stone axe, it wanted you to believe that branches and pebbles were more advanced than the most advanced tool in the universe, and people who say the current game is shit will literally overlook all of this.

With that being said, progression should not be tied to the story like it is in the release version, the lore being changed wasn't necessary, etc, but all that shit was bloat slop, and mods pretty much fix any issues, with that being said though if there truly is an open source version of Starbound and it seems to be as popular as it is, it does beg the question of why the fuck aren't there more mods for it, not even Terraria is open source, theoretically people could port/add whatever they want to the game, and I mean literally anything too.

>(beta) Tech
>artificial roadblocks
as opposed to environmental protection of the released version? the gimped tech might be the worst change imo, complete NO FUN ALLOWED bullshit there is no excuse for

All of these games are only good in the concept that they'd be good as a properly developed 3D Game. Think Risk of Rain vs Risk of Rain 2, it's completely night and day.

These games have insane content, but the gameplay and perspective is shit, even in real time.

Game's performance is kinda ass when you start wiring stuff in the frackin' mod.

Yea, but you can just have a home planet and bookmark it so you can just go back there when you want.
