Is it worth finishing this game if I dropped it all the way back in 2022 at the start of chapter 5? I thought it was a step down from the previous games, and didn't feel compelled to play it any further.

It is overall a massive step down but I liked mio so I finished it. The game in the middle ending becomes really damn good for the story then kind of fizzles for the ending but it's more worth just to say you beat it if you've put in a lot of time already. I've said many times the battle system is just a slog and not fun to play like 1 and 2

Not for the story, its a complete joke.
If the gameplay didn't convince you to continue back then, then just drop it.
Your time is much better spend playing any of the other xenoblade games.
Or any other games in general.

Downgrade from the previous two but it’s still a decent game.
DLC really good tho

Chapter 5 is the only "good" part of base game.
FR was a step up in multiple categories but it is still stuck in that setting, and it added elements to the series that I'm not looking forward to seeing later down the line.

It's like X in that you can mix and match classes to make a fuck you build but that means getting to the end and if you missed them, post-game. If you're not into any of that but liked the previous games just complete the main story and do the DLC, it's pure fanservice.

Well no. I didn't finish 2 and I won't force myself to finish it too.
