was this the first time in history that people realized that videogames could be art ?

Seeing people blow their load over this game and Bioshock Infinite, like they were the endpoints of gaming, made me think less of the hobby as a whole.

no
Okami, Ico, and others made that impression long before Spec Ops The Line
I had a solid idea of games as an artform by the mid-1990s

People realised that if the writing tries too hard to be deep and edgy, it can easily overshoot to cringe. This game crossed that threshold for entirely too many people and for good reason.

How can a subpar cover shooter than came out at a time when everyone was doing cover shooters be art?
I played that piece of shit for half an hour and uninstalled because it really was not good.

Shellshock Nam '67 did the military TPS narrative deconstruction much better, and it came out 8 years prior.

This type of story was done gazillion times in movies and books. Only low IQ """""gamers"""" think that this is somehow original and/or with artistic value.

If a video game is to be considered art, then the medium itself must serve to express the creator's vision. Postal 2 is art, as is Cruelty Squad. But narrative slop with shooting sequences and qtes and le heckin moral quandaroonies? Nah.
