Mafia 3 doesn't have a pointless open world. The problem with that game is that it forces you to do a LOT of repetitive open world activities just so you can progress the only interesting part of the game which is the story. Mafia 3's DLC is the best part of the game since it's pretty much just story missions.

No, the Mafia 1 and 2 open worlds are pointless because you literally don't have to engage with them and there's almost literally nothing to do in them.
