this shit is actually my favorite mainline. it's funny when i beat it as a teen i was like "where the heck are the side quests" only to open my past save and realize I didn't accept any freaking challenge quests LOL. I can make do with SMT 4A more animeish plot. playing this after a mainline marathon is hella refreshing.

Metaphor was too safe imo too. Every interesting direction they could've gone just gets cut or they pick the most basic safe option. I'm still mad that Louis loses to "humanity" since that just paints his entire argument as a strawman and that's fucking terrible. . The plot twist about this being set in the far future is neat but feels a little played out. I honestly think underwater did that twist significantly better. I mean not gonna lie, I'd rather play Underwater again than Metaphor even if Metaphor has the better gameplay because it's actually a game.

it was an Etrian Odyssey reference. The dungeon is literally a copy of Lost Shinjuku. It has no real relevance to the plot other than "humanity keeps fucking up"

Yeah I know. It honestly did feel like Atlus "Greatest Hits" the game but that just made it feel uninspired. I'm okay with generic but it felt more like they were covering a checklist rather than being a love letter. I don't mind replaying it maybe in the far future.

my rankings so far though. it's a little hard to rank the snes games because I'd probably put SMT1 above it but metaphor is the "funner" one to play but I'll be a bit rent free over SMT1 because of the whole mythology themes and how magical it felt. That ending is also emotional in a weird way.

Only a fool would ever think Louise's argument has any merit. The danger isn't the ideology it's that weak people naturally gravitate to that ideology and it spirals out of control.

That said while I liked Louise I thought the More plot line was infinitely more interesting and I was kind of disappointed we don't really get more information about the true magic and the archetypes beyond your own intervention in the world. I was hoping the game would go even more Meta after More fight but instead you just return to the fantasy to stomp Louise's nuts and the game just ends from there. Unironoically wouldn't mind fighting a demon god in space that is a metaphor for humanity after that.

I hope they make a sequel. That and exploring the different tribal cultures are things I thought the game lacked.

Overall though, both games are kinda scuffed. P5 Royal content felt too rushed to be truly great and I don't know fighting a wet dick of an antagonist felt kinda weak. It's kinda cool in a way but an antagonist without his full heart into it doesn't really have that oomph. not like the villains in OG P5 were that great either. P5 probably had more egregious writing moments and gameplay was kinda whatever but insanely easy after the first dungeon. SMT V is neat but I don't know, this game kinda feels I wouldn't say pretentious but they just throw a bunch of terms at you and go "oooOooOoooOoo we're so atmospheric and magical" but not in the neat way like nocturne, they just throw so much infodumping and "oooOooOoo mysterious moments" at you, it's so fucking jarring. Shit feels like unironically the Dark Souls of the SMT games. I don't hate it and it's pretty fun to play but it definitely feels schizophrenic.

Louis argument is just transhumanism. A bit of it too depending on your interpretation was his hometown getting fucked but I think that's perfectly fine for what it is but the fact he "lost" before you even fight him gives me a really bad taste. The game decides to give you a bad ending for agreeing with him and just tells you transhumanism is bad which fine sure, but do it on the basis of SOMETHING instead of just "transhumanism is BAD YOU CANT HANDLE IT"

In my defense, SMT1 is the only translated one with the ps1 port and it plays significantly better than SMT2. I just felt SMT2 had a more "interesting premise" but it kinda gets fucked with how ambitious it is. It is probably one of the most unique entries from the whole mainline and it is influential in IV like a shit ton. Like I think everyone can agree there was one subplot in 2 which was kinda stupid because it starts off as a main quest but then the plot ends on a side quest you just randomly bumble upon. Also, it has the worst amount of backtracking in the entire series. IF is worse if you're going on Reiko's route though.

Both sides on metaphor are both stupid because they're both aiming for utopia, a stupid idea by a stupid man. And that's kind of the point as why every mid character around them is also stupid as fuck with their ideas. There is no utopia, even the game acknowledges this. But that's kind of the point, isn't it? You ain't playing a jrpg playing hero for it's realism. That kind of shit is left for games like rimworld where you have to weight the choice between cannibalism vs losing 1% of your economic efficiency.

I'm playing 4A right now and it only has a few quests you have to manually accept (like the ones where dadga has you fight a puzzle battle) and the vast majority are deliver quests that just come up automatically (and they also seed domain dungeons around the overworld that drop a deliver item).
