Doing something else is an option too. If it's too frustrating to be fun for you, just do something else. Nobody is forcing you to play the difficult videogame. It's a voluntary challenge. Your honor is not on the line. You don't have to take online banter to heart.

It depends in the fight, there's some games that have give bs movesets to their bosses like Expedition 33 final bosses (Paintress, Renoir, Simon) with long windups, multiple fakeouts and followed by rapidly swings that you can't even react because they are not telegraphed, they are just instant.

Compare that to othe parry centric games like Sekiro, every boss in that game is an example of good game design, especially Inner Owl.

There's degrees to this. It's fine to have to concentrate and learn skills, but the moment I feel like I am *working* instead of playing a game, I drop it.

A game's difficulty should only be only so high as the player can win while staying focused for short periods of time. Skills to win the challenges should take into account what he may have learned this way previously.

It's a balance game designers should observe. Any need for "grinding" is a failure in design.

Is there a way to make bosses have all the same rules that apply to the player and still have them be challenging? I'm talking about flinching on most hits, getting interrupted while attacking, running out of stamina etc.

Can a boss BE a player character and still pose a danger to the player, or does a boss need mechanical advantages over the player to present a challenge?

i think it says something about the modern era of shitters that exist now where the only way someone can be good is through investing 100s or 1000s of hours into something and being "unemployed". like the concept of a nigga just being better than you or has an easier time picking up things than you doesnt exist. its the same with how people think you need to treat fighting games as a job to be good despite some of the best fighting game players having full time jobs while competing

>dozens of hours
Unless you're REALLY shit at anything you don't need that much to "git gud", repetition for a couple of minutes to an hour every day is enough to get the hang of something and this applies to studying too although that would take longer than muscle memory if you're not spending that much time with it, you just need to do what works best for you

It applies to everything, guitar as well for example, once you "get gud" you can drop it for a couple of months and pick it back up quickly

Dark Souls 1 did genuinely set out to entertain the player by presenting them with a fair challenge that they were expected to overcome with thought and perseverance, when players at the time were too used to games where you press X to win or where you could instantly retry things until you succeeded at them and wanted to know why they couldn't just mash R1 to kill Capra Demon and complained about him being "bullshit". Maximum Difficulty was never supposed to be the point of Dark Souls.
But then people forgot about the context of all that and even the series itself turned into picrel, culminating in Elden Ring.

I recently bought Returnal and finished the first 2 acts of the game in the first day I bought it (beat two runs back to back) only to then check reddit and see that shitters were proud of beating the first ZONE after hours of trying or cheering eachother after beating the first BOSS after 30 tries.

When enemies began to feint attacks, to make you roll at the wrong time, that was the beginning of the end.
I played Elden Ring before any other souls game and I was so confused as to why the boss in Stormveil had those weird delayed animations. Until I understood that they were made like this to give more of a challenge tho the Simon Says veterans.
