I can't even make a fucking post about it because EVERYONE is talking about this fucking game. Why is everyone acting like it's some masterpiece / best game of all time??? Forget Silksong, why just Hollow Knight? I played Hollow Knight and I'm not gonna lie and say it was horrible garbage, but it wasn't anything special. My theory is people just praise the game for being cheap, like the original wasn't very expensive at all and now the devs did it again to replicate the praise the first game got, which is why they made Silksong 20 bucks.

I didn't like the game enough to care about doing the dlc / extra side content so I'm pretty sure the next best "beat the game" from 100% completion is beating the hollow knight.

I can't be bothered with Metroidvanias in general. I enjoyed Symphony of the Night years ago, but it was mostly because of the music and presentation.

I emulated Super Metroid and tried HK for a while and I fail to see why such a huge number of people is drawin to these games. To me, they're like bloated 2D action platformers with extra steps and busy work. It's one of the oversaturated genres next to Roguelikes too.

I get what you're saying, but different strokes for different folks. I can sort of see the appeal of Super Metroid, at least visually / presentation wise it's significantly better than Hollow Knight. The weird part about Metroidvanias is more about how many people apparently like it or I guess specifically Hollow Knight/Silksong. The other gaming genres that are "less popular" don't have some magical game that everyone and their grandma talks about.

I've played a ton of Deathsmiles and Akai Katana and love them a lot. My only experience with Progear up until recently had been game rooms at conventions, but I was in the mood for another hori after blowing through Hazelnut Hex recently and that was the one I landed on

There are far more people who just want to experience the "community" of a game than actually play it. It's the "earthbound fan excited to play it for the first time" meme. HK had far more "I like the atmosphere and the fanart" than actual players. And even amongst the people who liked playing it they mostly just liked the boss rush challenge modes. The main game itself is poor.
Silksong may have a switch 2 moment: the bandwaggoners jump on it day 1 to be "part of it" and the long term success is ropey. Or it could still have legs and the "community" keeps it on zombie life support for the next 7 years while players all ask "so when does it get good?"
Meanwhile team cherry laugh all the way to the bank.
