it became a meme that every game announcement / news would be silksong, to the point where people who have never touched hollow knight were 'anticipating' it, kinda like skate 4 (before that was announced too)
anyway basically its popularity is because of a meme, you can also tell this because 75% of all hollow knight players played the game within the past 2 weeks

i just can't get over the fact devs just got a massive paycheck for being absolutely incompetent instead of getting pushback for taking so fucking long

Dunno really. I tried hollow knight but it was pretty mediocre game and suffered heavily from visuals where it was hard to tell apart foreground, background and hazards.

HK is one of the best, and biggest metroidvanias. The size really matters, it's why Elder Scrolls gets away with a lot of shit. It elevates it from a simple quest to a grand adventure.
Base HK had a tough true ending, which is a formative gaming experience, think Hell in Cave Story. Later added even harder content for challenger type of players.

Im not sure but you can be industry analysts are gonna be looking at what happened with this game for a long time and try to figure out how to clone the hype generated by a bunch of people posting the main character with a clown wig every single time there's a major gaming conference.
Silksong's all-time peak is like 6 times the peak of the original and still rising and it's only had like 3 or 4 trailers ever.
