I don't like its overall shift in gameplay style. Only spending like seven chapters with an army doesn't allow for much variance in playing. Every level ends up feeling like a puzzle to solve rather than a challenge to tackle. Like everything was specifically crafted and catered for you to win in a certain way. The Lord class uses the Mercenary moveset in Hopes, much like how Death Knight use the Dark Knight moveset and Saint use the Mortal Savant moveset. Judith, from what I see when she's on the battlefield as an AI, use the Mercenary combos so this is why I know that. It's the equivalent of how Thales, despite having a unique class, use the Dark Bishop moves as an AI opponent.

Sacred Stones was the 1st one I played. I hate modern fire emblem as its way too weeb and anime.

Blazing Swords get an honorable mention, Shadow Dragon seems kibd of meh from what I've played of it, New Mystery was kinda cool, Heroes is Heroes, and I don't ever want to replay Echoes ever again (and I therefore have no desire to try out Gaiden). Genealogy is unfortunately too archaic for me to get into, so I haven't even tried to get into Thracia. Binding Blade just feels slower-paced to me compared to Blazing Sword.

It's in my top 5 but it does have a lot of jank, uneven difficulty spikes and I don't like movement stars as a general concept. Plus the SNES and artstyle really limited how good it could look. GBA FE might have had less detail but the artstyle and visual clarity were a major improvement.

Shadow Dragon, but I didn't have the GameCube or Wii ones so I jumped from SD to Awakening, which in hindsight was a good thing since Awakening is the most direct sequel to SD, I tried playing Fates (R) but the story bored me and I dropped it after getting to the underground kingdom, then I played Echoes and really liked it, the maps are a bit simplistic but the characters and story are top notch, then I played Three Houses but I hated the persona social sim shit, having to do all that crap for like an hour between each skirmish was horrible and I just dropped it halfway through the blue lions storyline, but Engage thankfully was less insistent on that shit so I could actually finish it, great gameplay, kinda dumb story but I liked the characters, if they're gonna go over the top I prefer they just go all out rather than try to half-ass it like with Fates.

No that's not me, but hunter's volley is pretty nuts. I can appreciate the range of bow knights, but having stride gambit is already good enough for any shortcomings in range. I can live without canto if I'm careful with positioning and killing targets in range.
Imo it's not that hard to become a wyvern after pegasus if you're also learning axes to pick up death blow along the way. I could see going either way depending on the unit though.

I dunno about 3H, but I'm struggling to see where the 'openness' this anon is talking about occurs in any of the other new games. The DS remakes are the only ones where reclassing is 'free' in the sense that it doesn't have a consumable cost, but it still is limited by squad size. In FE12, I did occasionally want a lot of units on one class for a map, but not every time, and I used most of the classes at some point. The 3DS games have limited class pools per unit (fuck, I would love to run Barb Donnel), while Engage has weapon proficiency as a limiting factor, and that's to say nothing of the cost and availability of seals in those games.

What need is there to expand on dancers? Trying to do more with dancers leads to Ninian, who has a kick ass suite of buffs that are pretty much useless because they're not just better than dancing. fe7 is a big dumb enemy phase game and even then the special dances aren't worth it.
Rallies and things like the 3houses support battalions are great ideas for expanding ways that the team supports each other, but none of that really matters compared to action economy.

3H is the only game in the series that dips even remotely into VN-adjacent territory at times. Everything else has basically the same gameplay-story ratio as FE7 (the one with Lyn) or at worst Awakening (assuming you don't skip the support cutscenes). If you just want gameplay, Fates Conquest is probably the best game in the series.

FE8 normal is barely any different from hard mode since it only removes like 1-2 enemy autolevels depending on chapter which is not even gonna make a 1 stat point difference in a lot of cases, and FE8 itself is already a really easy game
FE6 normal still has most of what makes FE6 in general difficult and it actually nerfs some of your best units (melady/rutger/perceval) because they don't get HM bonuses, so their stat advantage in comparison to the enemies end up being about the same across both modes
