Were the dual screen nintendo systems actually good or just a gimmick? Why sis they drop the design entirely?

I wish rom hackers would hack DS games to be 100% playable on one screen.
More and more people will be emulating these games going forward.

It was a gimmick 90% of the time. Very few games made good use of it.

kind of a gimmick, the DS screens generally just acted as either single vertical screen or had secondary info on the bottom screen to clear up UI on the top.
in a way its a better implementation of what bandai were doing with the wonderswan where it have either a vertical or horizontal screen depending on the game.
i liked what monster hunter did by having the touch screen be a customizable set of buttons for various actions and info like items, crafting, keyboard and the like

it was mostly used to work around the fact that the screens had a tiny resolution

They'll always be the best Nintendo consoles for me. And still better featured than the two Switches.
Anonymous No.719832476
both of those

People used to bitch about "map screens", but that was easily the most kino aspect of both systems. We will never have truly hudless games ever again.

That's not an easy task at all. I don't think you know what goes into hacking. They can't just rework the entire games.

TWEWY
Neo just wasn't the same

yes, twewy would not have worked on any other console

kind of a gimmick but some amazing games game from the DS and 3DS platform. in retrospect, the DS and 3DS were fucking amazing

This is literally the hardest thing to do which is why companies are just remaking the games

Eh, top screen combat was mostly useless, i left it at autoplay most of the time. Now the resistive touch screen was absolute LUDO. This is why these consoles are impossible to emulate well and their games not feel like shit. There is nothing like playing twewy on og hardware.

they were actually good, although some games experimented with it as a gimmick, it was kinda nice to have some menu or map in the other screen.
as far as system design overall goes, better than switch

Fuck off.

There's already people doing single screen hacks.
You can make it work but on games that just do map and inventory shit.
Games that depend on the bottom screen like The World Ends With You just get remade.

Check out MelonMix it's a MelonDS fork. Two games have been patched to work this way so far.

The DS/3DS was the golden age. Entire genres died or were hobbled by the loss of the dual screens and stylus.

i'd say that the stylus was much more important than the second screen

Kek 99% of microphone gimmicks were some variant of "Blow on the windmill :D "
Embarrassing for anyone over 8 years old.

3DS was peak. Best portable console ever, followed by GBA SP.

Hijacking this thread. What's the best 3ds family console to get nowadays? I's rather have something lightweight as the switch have made me hate bulky "portables". Also I have never seen the 3d effect in my life so that will be a nice novelty for me.

If you were under the age of 15 when they were new, they were good. If you were over the age of 15, they were a gimmick. Quite simple

just get the original 3DS, new 3DS doesn't have too many games that need the extra buttons so unless you wanna play xenoblade 3D or Monster Hunter, don't bother
the XLs arent that big either but its up to preference
