I think the 2 duology is massively overrated on here, it used to be talked about a lot more a couple years back, showed up in a lot of 3x3 threads etc but I hardly see it anymore.
I didn't like Innocent Sin much, but you should still play it before Eternal Punishment, which I liked quite a bit more.
Both of them are hard sequels to Persona 1 with returning party members and plot threads, that being said you can still skip it, but I think Persona 1 is worth a play anyway.
Realistically if you've never played a Persona you should just play 3, 4 or 5, the 2 trilogies are basically 2 different series that just share a name. You won't get the experience that everyone thinks of when they hear 'Persona' from 1 or 2 duology. You can always return to it later

I vastly prefer Persona 1 and the IS/EP duology to modern Persona, but that’s because I love the feeling of “90s SMT”, and how the games were just part of a wider fantastic/occult JP manga/anime culture back then. But no, I don’t think they are that really interesting to play for a younger audience.

At most only contrarians and Tumblrites like P1/P2. P2 has decent story writing and Nyarlathotep is a cool villain but the gameplay is ass. P1 has a bit of that hardcore SMT playstyle but you’d have to be a masochist to enjoy it.

Whatever story is in those games, it's delivered atrociously because 99% of the time you're exploring a dungeon and fighting.
And on the rare occasion the story is actually advancing, the characters are repeating themselves and over-explaining everything to an insulting degree because the games are aimed at 10 year olds.

P1 is easy as shit except for the final dungeon & snow queen quest. SP costs are determined by Persona level not spell so you can just put an insanely powerful spell on a weak Persona and melt everything.

Persona 2 is garbage.
The gameplay is piss easy and aged poorly, dungeons are plain aside from the last one (there isnt even a superboss to test your party), the story is

I haven't heard about it being lower quality, it's not mentioned on the mod page to my knowledge, but idk. Seemed fine when I played it

P1 is trash in every way except the music
both P2s are kinda better but the gameplay is still bad
the reason nobody talks about these is because they are very hard to acquire (legally obviously) and are missing on a lot of major storefronts like all the SMT spinoffs
but honestly you should just start from P3 or higher if you want to get into persona autism, go play mainline SMT if you want actual gameplay

EP is my definitely my favorite persona game, but you should play 1 and IS first.
Also play the PSP version for the additional scenario added.

Thanks for the replies, my favorite game is Xenogears and i was curious to try other JRPGs with complex stories. At this point, i think I'll try pretty much all of them, between Persona and SMT

Nothing in the SMT series really has complex stories, most of them are gameplay focused. Also most games in the franchise aren't story related, off the top of my head only SMT4 and Apocalypse, Persona 2 IS & EP, and Digital Devil Saga 1&2, so if you've never played any you should go for a more recent one and then go back if you like it and want more.
I would first pick something from the PS2 era onwards, especially for Persona where 3 onwards is vastly different

nta but he'd be able to stomach planescape torment anyways. the combat is just as tacked on as xenogears' is and has its share of cinematic cutscene attacks. just replace fights vs. gears and giant mutants with random thugs in alleyways. both are played solely for their stories and absolutely not for their gameplay

No, all 6 persons games are about the same story wise and all of them have similar themes. P2 duology became famous because the gameplay is such dogshit that the story is the only thing people talk about but it isn't actually better written than any of the other games.

Innocent Sin had more romance bullshit than 3-5, it felt like 70% of NPC’s dialogue was about someone having a crush on someone, or how all the boys of x school were so hot or something, and that wasn’t just in the school, that was out on the world map.
