I'd have to read the book to give you a definitive answer but based on every other experience I will just assume 'the book was better'. It isn't because books are a superior medium, nor is it because the film was bad; it's because the story was originally envisioned in the form of a book. Something was lost along the way. Same goes for every other medium translation. Corners are always cut.
I'm sure weird exceptions exist but I have not personally ever encountered one. The only way it "works" is if the original work sucked shit and the adaptation produced a good result regardless.
