Standards were pretty low in MGS1/2's day, mind you, especially 1's. It was basically down to it and Kojimbo's prior work, Snatcher, as the only games with even half-decent voice acting. That said, by 3 I remember it sounding exaggerated and over-grumbly n' gravelly even then. Overall I'd say the performances in the game were decent, though.

MGS is a very unrealistic and straight up surreal game franchise at times. There's a fat dude on roller skates who plants bombs and drinks cocktails in MGS2 for example. But yeah, the over the top vocal performance is the issue. I have great distaste for when people try to force MGS into some kind of grim dark direction, when it was never that. It was always over the top wacky melodrama, and Hayter was perfect in his role. Sunderland sounded bored the whole time in MGSV.

I'm tempted to replay the whole series but in japanese. I bet it's pretty good.
