What do we think about SMTIV 12 years later?

I remember liking it a lot. It was my first and last SMT game.

It's better than 3 and 5, about on par with Strange Journey.

very strong start but gets too easy as soon as you reach tokyo
still entertaining throughout

I bought it because there was a 3DS bundle thing with Fire Emblem Awakening, and was pleasantly surprised, it got me into the franchise beyond Persona.

I hope smt 6 takes after it more than 3/5, i'm tired of barren wastelands

I did a recent marathon of 1,2,IF (dnf got filtered at Reiko's final boss), 3 (TDE and Freedom), IV (Neutral), IVA (Massacre and Bonds) and I found IV was worst than I remember and IVA was just as fucking good as the first time I played it.

Immaculate story. If it had FINAL's gameplay it would be the best SMT.

I just bought SMT VV and man I fucking hate it. Is that game or SMT III as well better?

IV plot drops pretty hard once you enter Tokyo. It had some really neat moments but it dropped yet again after the reactor and it just didn't really do the alignment split that well. The last 20% of the game in each of the route felt pretty damn rushed. Pacing in general seems to be IV's main problem. As soon as Walter leaves the party, everything gets fucking blazing speed quick. Neutral ending gave me a really bad taste. I hate how it copied 1 but 1's ending seemed a lot more magical and mystical in nature while 4 just felt "welp you beat the shit out of these fuckheads, now Tokyo and Mikado can be combined, good job! The End." while 1's ending felt more like "be free from the gods and demons, humanity's potential and all that jazz". I genuinely feel that a lot of people in this thread don't really remember much after Mikado.

Why do you hate V?

literally accept the sprite demons means you have the largest variety of Demons and that you can ALSO abuse smirk and it is the best SMT game

Its good albeit a bit unbalanced if you know what you're doing. IVA is better in terms of gameplay I think the game could've really benefited from a VV style revision where they take the same game and attached the improvements from the next game into it but keeps the story intact.

Still in my opinion the best entry point into mainline.

I hate it because it's ugly barren wastelands with tedious sidequests.

Great game as a whole, but definitely had some issues

Good:

>Atmosphere is top notch with how Tokyo looks and feels, as is exploring since it feels claustrophobic at times and tons of paths intertwine in a way that makes sense for a blasted city
>Music is phenomenal, lots of grungy rock, synth, and even really chill tracks
>Building your character and party is fun like any SMT entry
>Despite the story being on the nose for most of the game, the actual worldbuilding and what's going on behind it all is really interesting and compelling
>Personal opinion, but Neutral having so much content, optional fights, and little story threads to follow up on is a blast
>The inclusion of armor and weapons was a lot of fun and seeing the changes in how your character looks was really cool (going from a knightly looking warrior, to a grungy streetkid, to a biker, to someone with football gear, to eventually wearing full on swat gear was awesome)

Bad:

>Smirk system was iffy at times and balanced in a way where you could get nuked for things (mostly) outside your control, see bringing Walter into the Minotaur fight
>An enemy ambush could frequently lead to a full on gameover just because you got caught
>Quest log was a pain to navigate, with the game basically saying, "I gotta go west of Ginza to a shelter!" but then no further direction at all, and the shelter in question was actually more northwest
>Strength is broken in a bad way, and demons using MP for physical attacks sucked since most physical-focused demons had shit MP
>Alignment system sucked since doing somewhat kind/nice things led to you going law and genociding a nation, getting neutral required playing as a bipolar freak, and you could straight up get locked out of neutral if you balanced your choices too much due to the numbers it works on

Genuinely a fantastic game, one that I desperately hope to see ported one day with a few changes to the systems (most of which SMTIV: Apocalypse did).

Nocturne was my first SMT game. I played it in 2020 and i thought it was kinda bland and boring. Then when i first played 4 a few years later i couldn't put the game down it was actually so peak.

It's a good game but the worst mainline game. Unfinished on all fronts.
