There's a long running story arc involving government conspiracies and ayys, but the bulk of the show is unconnected monster-of-the-week episodes that arguably what make The X-Files what it is. There's some pretty good shit in it, but like >>719843348 said, the mythology arc kind of sucks because it has no satisfying payoff.

>S: *roll eyes* Oh god Moulder not this again. Where do you find these nutjobs?
>M: Nut Bob not Job. Now hear me out here, OK? Bob used to work at S4 in Area 51.
>S: *sigh* S4?
>M: Secret mountainside facility. It's where the hangars are.
>S: And?
>M: And according to Bob the government runs a clandestine UFO recovery and reverse engineering program there, which he was employed at. Bob's job was to work on the power supply, the reactor core.
>S: Moulder, for the love of god..
>M: Now wait a minute. Don't pre-judge! Bob says the power source runs on element 115, and it is used to generate an anti-gravitational field.
>S: There is no element 115 on the periodic table, Moulder.
>M: I know that, but it has been *theorized* to exist.
>S: Such a large element could never be stable enough to be used as a power source.
>M: Maybe, but there is also the theory of the island of stability. There may be a metastable isotope of element 115. Elerium.

It is monster of the week with an overarching story that doesn't seem to go anywhere. The episodes focsuing on the overarching story are the worst ones as well. Granted, I only ever watched the first few seasons then stopped out of boredom. Watched a few episodes here and there over time. Most episodes just consist of ripping off some piece of popular media you're already well familiar with and condensing it into a worse 22 minute version of it. For example, one episode is literally just The Thing.

However, I will say it seemed like in later seasons they have a few kino episodes. Not sure if these were guest written or directed. The one that was a parody of COPS comes to mind, as well as the black and white Frankenstein episode. Again, even these are just ripoffs of other works, but were produced in a way to at least stand out and be interesting. It is probably better to just find a list of the best episodes and watch those.

It would be an open world detective game where Mulder and Scully have an overarching mystery to solve but there are also smaller cases you can do.
You drive to a new location. Look around the area. Figure out the case and kill the monster of the week.
Overaching story would be some shit about Aliens of course.
Basically like The Sinking City but less jank and set in Maryland.

the monster of the week episodes are where the show is at its strongest

buffy the vampire slayer and twin peaks are good too. not so much aliens, but theyre both similar to xfiles in their own ways.
twin peaks is more of an actual story, buffy is like xfiles where theres monster of the week plus a story

It's an episodic TV series made in the 90s.
The appeal is throwing on the occasional episode and enjoying it for what it is.
It isn't some multi season long epic and it doesn't try to be.
I'd look up a list of the best episodes and give a couple of them a watch. If the best episodes don't hook you then starting from s01e01 isn't going to either.

Two of the most hyped and lived up to it and still today well regarded games are largely inspired by x-files. They came out in 2000. You know what they are. One is more effective in creating the mood, one is more like, we're too scared to try to pull that off so let's do our silly British humor instead but we will just literally recreate the series plot and pinch a few character designs etc

This is a really bad idea, because what happened is it ran so long that the writers got bored and self conscious about doing 'genre' material or a formula, or whatever. So they started to wink. To put do fourth wall breaks and outright self-parody. That's fine but the problem is there's a kind of faggot retard nerd who infect say, /tv/ and reddit, who think that when someone writer winks, it's essential to prove that you see the wink and that you're like 'in on it', not someone who is being winked about, yeah? These people are vocal so any list of best episodes is dominated by the set of episodes which aren't really X-Files episodes, they're comedy pieces about the show, implicit commentaries on the show, on the phenomenon of there being a show, etc.
The worst possible place to start

LA Noire style investigations where you play as Scully and at best you catch glimpses of spooky stuff, but the cases otherwise come together in coherent mundane ways while Mulder rants about crazy paranormal explanations until the player thoroughly believes he's a nutjob. NG+ has you play as Mulder and you get to see way more stuff than Scully did, in the same spirit of the show never giving her enough proof to believe. You get added conversational segments where you have to present evidence and select arguments to convince her of what you saw/learned/suspect at the end of each case. True ending comes from managing to convince her for every case. Granted, that would be a lot more effective if it was a new IP and not X-Files, since the players are primed to already know Mulder isn't crazy.

I've also heard that Alan Wake is basically if the X-Files was a game? I've never got around to trying it out though.

At some point, you're supposed to realize that belief is just a tool for you to keep going and if you understand the thing you believe isn't real, the delusion is necessary because most human lack the ability to define their existence as something necessary.
