Singular "they" is grammatically tortured and explicitly ideological newspeak, you tremendous zoomer faggots.
Modern English has historically used male pronouns as a presumptive default, most notably in place of the neuter-singular possessive "its", because neuter is associated with objects and animals, denoting lesserness. Feminist kikes had a huge problem with this male default, and have been working for decades to clumsily alter the language.
They started with the awkward conglomerations of "his/her", "he/she", and "(s)he", eventually shifting to a less obtuse but equally obnoxious strategy of recruiting the neuter-plurals "they" and "their" into double-duty as alternative neuter-singulars. They pretend that this usage has legitimacy via historical precedent largely cherry-picked from poetic usage (similar to majestic plural), which is a red herring and doesn't matter either way since the usage objectively muddies the language.
They've been forcing this onto the maleducated public for long enough that the absurdity does not register to their eyes and ears, and it's creeping into vernacular even where the sex of the pronoun's antecedent is known.
